BC ELECTION 2001Mixed Member Proportional RepresentationIf the previous governments has brought in some form of proportional representation, this un-democratic result may have been avoided, or at least ameliorated. Let's assume that 26 additional seats had been added to the Legislature to be distributed in such a way so as to make the Legislature more proportionately representative. The house would have looked more like the second last row below.
Note that because of the large number Liberal seats, this is not perfect proportionallity--it would take the addition of 53 extra seats to do that. Nevertheless, 26 seats would provide a total of 15 NDP MLAs, 9 Greens; two each of Unity and Marijuana MLAs and one independent. Just for for, let's pick these extra MLAs from those candidates who
got the highest percent of the popular votes for their parties. The opposition
MLAs, then, would be
