My CJ5
I've owned a lot of 4x4's over the years but the favorite is my 1970 CJ5. I first saw it parked in the back lot when I started working at T H Auto. Weeds growing up out of the rust holes in the floor, brakes, tranny, locked up in rust. The owner said that he started it up every year and let it run for a while, that was about the only thing that worked. It only had 25.000 miles on it. Back in the mid 70's he bought a new top, hood and fenders for it all of which he would throw in on the deal  (if he could find them ). It was in such bad shape I had to think about it for a while. I talked him into hauling it home for me and the rebuild began. I ripped it down to the bare frame, repared some crackes and blasted and painted it. Took the axles apart cleaned, blasted and painted, all new brakes. New 3 inch lift. Rebuilt the tranny and transfer case. Every nut and bolt every where taken apart and inspected. Bought a new fiberglass tub from 4WD Hardware, fitted the dash, seat brackets, new gas tank, cut all the holes and brought in for paint along with the new fenders, hood, and grill. This all took a couple of years. It was worth all the money and hard work.
Sweet little Jeep! It wasn't long before I bought new 31's and rims, ok..... so they were chrome rims..... but I didn't know any better at the time. Then I did something that changed everything. The Colorado trip was an awakening for the old Jeep. After that I needed bigger and better, so in went the J10 dana 44's with lockers and power steering. Much trial and error, re-doing what I had just done restoring the CJ. Then I had to go out and again buy new tires and rims. 33's and 6 hole rims..... ok...... so they were white spoke, what can I say.
Now for the past several years all I have done is wheel the CJ, I've wheeled it a lot! 21,000 total wheeling miles. I drove it as a daily driver for about year so I can subtract a thousand or so miles. I drive it to where I wheel it, I wheel it, and I drive it home. It's developed stress cracks in the frame over the last few years, I keep welding them up. Things are getting loose and worn but it still works ok. I might sell it to help build my Little Willy. That's going to be a wild ride!
