Just for Fun ... with Dave Conley & Elsa Conrad
PLAYING HOUSE

July 1999: two thirtysomethings finally enter the world of grownup life, buying a house on their second anniversary. Yikes! Suddenly there's a mortgage to pay .... gutters to clean ... plus a never-ending wish list of home improvements and additions.

Now fast-forward three years. The wish list is longer, the challenge of making payments has escalated with job changes and recession, and the gutters could still use cleaning. But there remains a starry-eyed amazement at the idea of a house that's all ours ... here in the laid-back town of Nashua, New Hampshire.

THE CATS

DAVE'S PORTFOLIO
On July 23, 1999, we swallowed hard and moved into this 3-bedroom, Cape Cod house. It's one mile from downtown Nashua, six miles from the Massachusetts border, and one block from the nearest Dairy Queen.
The back yard features a quaint bridge (right, below) straddling a pond with water lillies and other plants. We unknowingly  inherited a few koi fish; alas, two harsh winters have deep-sixed them. Frogs are a future possibility.
Note the greenhouse, one of many quirky touches that attracted us. The adjacent sunroom (detail below) provides lots of sunlight for basking with the Sunday paper.
VITAL STATISTICS

Address: 24 Sullivan Street, Nashua, NH 03064-1364
Color: Grey
Rooms: 9 (3 bedrooms, 1-1/2 baths)
Built: 1945, wood frame & shingle
Style: Custom Cape Cod (whatever that means)

Gradually we're making the house our own, adding a little Mission-style furniture here and the occasional wiring or window upgrade there. Next up is salvaging a dank utility room in the basement for a home gym. But no matter what state of disarray our home is in at the moment, you're always welcome to stop by.
