Hi
| | | |
If I compare myself to my neighbor
That's all I'll ever be: Better than my neighbor.
And everybody knows what an idiot he is.
But if I compare myself to Superman I can fly.
Hi! Well, I'm flying again. Retirement really isn't what it's reputed to be. Good thing I'm young enough to do something about it.
Driving an 18-wheeler is a great way to see the country. The biggest lesson I learned is that this country is larger, by several orders of magnitude, than I thought. I can't imagine how big the world is! It was fun, demanding, and occasionally awe inspiring, but it wasn't meaningful or fulfilling. Ah yes, the quest for meaning.

Volunteering | |
I agree with the notion that if there's any meaning in life, it's the meaning I choose to give it. But at the same time I can't completely separate myself from my environment. Although driving can came pretty close : ) So I've chosen to volunteer in hospitals and nursing homes.
So far it's a mixed bag. Generally I enjoy it, and when I don't I can still say I'm pretty good at it. Being an older male helps. Although there are some residents who are environmental disasters, at the end of a busy day I can say I've done more than added 0.0001% to my (or somebody else's) accumulated wealth. And that, to me, is flying.

Computers | |
I've always been programming computers in one form or another and I probably always will. I remember pedaling my bike to Cornell's Upson Hall in 1968 to program an IBM 360 with WATFOR. Lately, I've been programming to support my other endevors. For example, a nice database of interstates, rest areas, truck stops and how many parking spots they have, and which lane to be in to make the exit from I70 westbound to I25 northbound in Denver, Co. And digital drug cards. And I'm thinking about digital charting. And I'm still having fun!
And I'll probably always be playing computer games. Lately I've been playing World of Warcraft because it's popular and I never let dated graphics get in the way of my imagination. To quote BB King, "It's not the glory, it's the story." Now don't get me wrong, I have significant processing power and the desire to use it, but the desire to exercize my imagination is bigger. Heck, I even read books!
