USB troubleshooting

If Windows 98 fails to recognize a USB device when it is attached to a system, and you have performed the troubleshooting steps recommended by the manufacture of the device you are connecting, you may have to edit the Windows registry. Please read the following notice prior to performing any of these steps.

Any use of the information provided herein, is performed at your own risk. You should make a backup copy of the registry files prior to executing any of the following steps. Incorrect use of the registry editor and editing the registry files can cause serious problems that may require a complete reinstall of your operating system. We assumes no responsibility, expressed or implied, regarding the consequences of any action taken as a result of the information provided herein.

To remove and reinstall the USB registry key in Windows 98, perform the following steps:

  1. Go to START | RUN.
  2. In the "Run" dialog box, type in "regedit" (without the quotes) and click on "OK."
  3. The "Registry Editor" will appear with a list of the registry Keys.
  4. Click on the "+" to the left of "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE."
  5. On the sub-menu that opens below it, click on the "+" to the left of "ENUM."
  6. Listed as a sub-key of "Enum", is the folder "USB."
  7. Highlight the "USB" folder by clicking once with your left mouse button while the cursor is directly over the "USB" folder.
  8. Once the folder is highlighted, (it will appear blue) press the [Delete] key on your keyboard one time.
  9. A prompt will appear asking if you are sure you want to delete this registry value. Select "Yes" to delete it.
  10. Close the registry editor by clicking on the "X" in the top right corner of the "Registry Editor" screen.
  11. Disconnect any USB devices you may have connected to the computer.
  12. Click on START | SHUT DOWN. Of the available options, select "Restart" and click on "OK."
  13. When the computer reboots and is at the Windows desktop, it will display a message stating that "Windows has found new hardware."
  14. Once Windows is finished installing the hardware, you can connect your USB devices and they will be successfully recognized by Windows.
