To access the ""msconfig"" utility, click on Start and select Run.
Type "msconfig" in the Open window and press [ENTER].
In the Startup tab on the far right there are several check marks. Each checkmark represents a program that is starting every time you start your computer.
Take half of the check marks out. It does not matter which half, just choose half of them and select [OK].
Reboot the computer and use it for a while.
If the problem persists then one of the programs that are still starting are most likely causing the issue.
Go back into the Startup tab of "msconfig."
Replace the checkmarks that you had removed.
Take out the other half of the check marks. Click [OK] and allow your system to restart.
When the problem no longer exists go back into "msconfig" and put half of the check marks in that are gone. Restart again.
Repeat steps 4-10 until the problem is solved.
This process can also be used in the "config.sys", "autoexec.bat", "system.ini", and "win.ini" tabs of "msconfig."
The programs that we need to keep running include "System tray" and "Scan Registry."
Some other programs we suggest to leave running include:
3Dmouse this is you scroll mouse capabilities,
Keyboard manage the extra buttons on your keyboard,
Anything that starts with a V as it is most likely part of virus scanning software.
When this has been completed we will need to go into the registry to permanently remove these programs.
Click on Start and select Run. Type in "regedit" and press [ENTER] to start the registry editor.
WARNING be extremely careful when using this tool.
Click on the plus[+] sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Then click on the plus[+] sign next to each of the following:
Software
Microsoft
Windows
Current Version.
Click on the folder labeled Run-.
Press the [Delete] key and approve the deletion of the registry key.
Now click on the folder labeled Run Services- (may not be listed).
Press the [Delete] key on your keyboard and approve the deletion.
Now click on the minus[-] sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click on the plus[+] sign next to HKEY_CURENT_USER.
Follow steps 19 23 again. When this is done close the program.
This will permanently disable these programs from starting at boot.
If you have made any changes in the Autoexec.bat, config.sys, system.ini, or the Win.ini follow this next set of steps. If not then disregard the rest of the steps listed.
Click on Start and select Run. Type in "Sysedit" and press [ENTER].
This will show a copy of all four files that we may need to edit.
Click on the window with the file that we need to change.
Find the line that we took the checkmarks out of.
Place the letters "rem" (stands for remark or tells Windows not to look at this line) in front of the line in question.
After all the changes have been made, click on file (upper left corner and click on save).
This will tell the computer to ignore this line even if in the future a check mark is put back into the box in "msconfig".
The reason for steps 15 on is to eliminate the possibility of accidentally enabling the program or command that is causing the conflict.
