Subject: Pass the syrup, eh? Date: Thu, 04 Dec 2003 02:41:06 -0800 Howdy, Well I know its been a while since I've emailed, but better late than never. Much has been happening and it would be an extremely looong email to explain it all fully, so here is a much abridged version... End of October I left life in Dorking, England behind - That one extra month working there after my time in Europe convinced me it was time to move on. I had a great time and awesome experiences there, but its definitely time to move on to new things, and I'm sure Joanne is happy to have the house to herself now for a while! So first it was off to Scotland for a week! Lots of hairy coos, haggis, and highland adventures ensued. I based myself firstly in Edinburgh which is a wonderful city (and Kylie Minogue visited while I was there!!!) I did some bus touring and hiking, visited many castles and the odd Loch too of course. Re-enacting scenes from Braveheart and The Highlander series was inevitable too after a few drops of the local brews. Partying in Glasgow was a heck of an experience - understanding the Scots was at times a struggle, but once both communicating parties are in various states of inebriation it suddenly gets so much easier to understand the "och"s, the "nay" and the "aye"s. Then before I knew it I was landing in a little town on the east coast of America called NEW YORK! Well, what can I say this place blew me away! I got to catch up with my NY friend Daria who pointed me in all the right directions. Highlights included doing all of the following in one day: going to Battery Park to see the Statue of Liberty, walking through Wall Street (and not have to dodge being flattened by suicidal stockbrokers jumping out of windows like I'd expected), seeing the huge construction site that the former World Trade Center now is, visiting the United Nations buildings, the views from the top of the Empire State Building, all the extravaganza of Times Square where did I mention I scalped tickets and got to see a show at the Orpheum Theatre. And guess what, it was 'The Boy From Oz' starring no less than the great Aussie actor Hugh Jackman. Some great homesickening scenes (the finale being 'I Still Call Australia Home' didn't help). My ticket was for one of the best, ie. most expensive, seats in the house, row 3, dead centre of the upper section - a $US129 ticket which I scalped just after opening time for $25, then had to sit next to the poor lady who had given the ticket away to some guy on the street when she hadn't been able to sell it at face value and who had then in turn sold it to me. haha! Apparently Boy George's new show was opening in the theatre across the road because there was much craziness and crowds and TV crews blocking the entire street. ok sorry this is the abridged version right? And thats not to mention the entire day I spent exploring Hyde Park, and the rest of the week filled with NewYork/Seinfeld cliched events, riding on subways, catching taxis, eating in diners / LittleItaly / ChinaTown, etc, etc. Its mid-November and where do I find myself? No, not on Kings Beach slopping on some sunscreen and preparing for a nice warm summer soaking up the sun and bobbing in the waves at Caloundra. Instead the best place to be would be in Eastern Canada just as winter is starting... right?? My first glimpse of Vancouver was not the most exciting, its raining, and its windy, and its COLD!!! Luckily though the people here have totally forced me to change my opinion of the place and my time has been fantastic and relaxing after the pace of the previous few months. Even though my job hunting has been fairly unsuccesful right now (curse my lack of organisation and therefore lack of visa) catching up with my great Canadian friend Julia has been fantastic and meeting her room-mates (And buttering them up with frosted muffins) has resulted in the appropriation of free accomodation... at least for now. Within my first 24 hours in Canada I managed to gain an important supporting role in the cast of a Canadian hockey film (ok so I was an extra in a party scene... but I'm sure my acting shines), eat a waffle brunch (with maple syrup of course) and partake in the great spectacle of varsity sports (its kind of addictive cheering on the home university where I'm staying and I'm now a regular). Visiting the ski resort Whistler managed to make me extremely frustrated at not being able to find work and also extermely jealous of those with money enough to be staying up there and not to mention the whole being able to ski/snowboard thing which I still haven't actually tried yet! Meanwhile life in Vancouver right now is quiet - all the students, including Jules, are studying for exams so I'm left to my own devices most of the day - so I'm either at the gym or otherwise being generally lazy. I played a short gig last week (at a Thanksgiving Dinner of all things) which was nice to dust the cobwebs off, and I expect to do some more gigs around Vancouver in the next couple of weeks which hopefully will make for some cool experiences. So... Christmas looms and though its all a bit undecided right now it looks like I'm going to be heading into central Canada to visit some real Canadians (ie. Julia's family) where there should be a white christmas waiting for me (Actually I'll be lucky if santa arrives because from what I've been told, it sounds like the temperature there is actually often colder than what he's used to in the North Pole!). Hopefully I'll get a chance to do some real cross-country skiing though and if all my digits survive I might play some gigs there too. As for the new year who knows what that'll bring - I'm very tempted by Cameron's call to arms down in the depths of Wyoming, USA so I can try my luck at getting ski resort work down there. But perhaps the lure of the Aussie sun will twist my arm to lead me to head back home again - advice anyone?? On a side note, I want to congratulate my good friends Emily and Adrian who were married on the 23rd November. It was great talking to Em before the wedding - I hope everyone had a wonderful day and enjoyed Goat's well decorated cake. I wish you both all the happiness in the world - for now and into the future (and I hope being married doesn't stop you guys from partying)! On another side note, a month or so ago saw the passing of Elliot Smith, a musician who I've been a huge fan of since dear Madeleine introduced me to his work a couple of years ago. A very sad day indeed. Next time any of you are in a record store - look him up and buy an album, you won't be sorry and to enjoy his music is the best way we can celebrate his life. ok, must go, its almost 3am here and the sandman is calling. Yeah and sorry - It turned out to be quite a long email, eh? (note the use of canadian post-sentence slang. Impressive, eh?) David

Sent: Thursday, May 15, 2003 10:52 PM Subject: v2.0 Dave in England - Magical Mystery Tour Hello everybody, So... my "magical mystery tour" continues... hmm in fact its been neither "magical" nor "mysterious". And come to think of it I haven't been on a"tour" as such either. so I guess that just leaves " ". Ok so you've noticed that I'm becoming delirious. Work is kind of taking it out of me by about 2pm everyday. So unfortunately my plan everyday to send heaps of emails has become unstuck because I'm just plain exhausted. But if you send me an email I do reply, so you only get out what you put in (a lesson I learnt from those wonderful Nutri-Grain ads)I've basically taken over the contracts administrator position, as well asmy customer service role - so one of my biggest and bestest jobs is chasing up clients overdue bills. how wonderful! Meanwhile, I can't wait to get paid. s are cool when you're getting paid them, though not so cool when you're spending them. Though it is amazing what you can buy with 20p or 40p. In far more exciting work news we are installing a large system in Stockholm next week and assuming we get properly organised, I'll be going along to add a helping hand. so that will hopefully be a weeks excursion to sweden! my fingers are crossed for that one. Life in the house is good - Joanne's back from her week holiday, and missing her man whose gone home to Australia now - something I can empathise with. Tonight I am buying and cooking - any ideas for what I should feed these people?!?!? help!!! :p Yesterday Steve and I continued our regimented fitness program. We have taken to riding up Box Hill - awesome view up the top, and the ride down is just astounding!! my plans to play football have fallen through because the season just finished - so everyones playing cricket now. instead I'll be pursuing a booming squash career it seems. or maybe lawn bowls will be the go. Or chess, I've already started training - I beat steve so that will be good basis for some gloating for as long as I can hold off the rematch. Things that suck: -Trying to open a bank account in england is impossible. apparently they simply do not want to take my money off me! -Liverpool's llast match on the weekend - I bet money on Owen to score and Liverpool to win. Neither happened. -The lack of warmth and humidity means you can be exercising hard for an hour and not work up a sweat. -Not being able to follow my Lions -Steve's lowry Things that rock: -Jam Donuts -David Gray's new album, and his last one too -Amsterdam - hopefully I'll be there in a few weeks. -Elton John dressed like one of Willy Wonka's oompa loompas. -Joanne's BMW thats all later peace love other stuff david!

Mona Lisa! The Louvre, Paris
Sent: Friday, May 30, 2003 10:48 PM Subject: v3.0 Dave in England - We're not in Kansas anymore... Hey everyone, Well I'm sorry for the delay in emailing. Things have been full on around here these last few weeks. Paris was awesome. It rained almost the whole time we were there though which was disappointing. It didn't spoil the wonderful sights though. Jo and I were exhausted though because we walked basically everywhere across europe. we saw heaps, like the mona lisa and heaps more in musee du louvre, I had a xxxx in an ozzy pub across the road from the moulin rouge, being accosted by beggars under the tour eiffel, notre dame cathedral, lunch on the champs elysees, napolean bonaparte's tomb, the bastille, the arc de triomphe, etc, etc !! And I didn't even see half the stuff I'd like to see. So I'll be going back there sometime soon to do as much as I can. Last weekend I met my new friend jacqui (hi jacqui!!) and was taken on a varied tour of london. the highlight was most definitely saturday night in the Redback, a pub full of aussie ex-pats. It was nice to spend some time with people my own age :) Jacqui and I are planning on doing heaps of stuff together, so hopefully I don't make her hate me too soon and we get a chance to see lots. This weekend we were planning on having a london theatre adventure, but I've been sick these last few days missing work with this hardcore throat infection so it doesn't look like I'll be able to go :( And I think being unwell makes being homesick 10 times worse which isn't much fun. In other news some of my friends back home graduated thursday night. I would have been graduating too if I were there and I really wish I could have. Carrie has told me that the ceremony was on the news because of Sir William Deane's speech and Emma tells me that he was great. So congrats to you grads, and I guess I'm a law graduate officially now too - I think my certificate gets sent in the mail, but hopefully I can go to a presentation next year with the fel, nic, ning, amanda, fox and the rest of my science/law/whatever dual degree buddies. Being at home during the day has its perks - lots of The Osbournes to watch, and lots of Gaelic football which is a bloody awesome game - these guys are psycho!! And my FreeCell percentage is up to 97%... My stockholm trip for work is hopefully going ahead and I'll leave next saturday for a week in sweden! wh00t! ok my heads starting to throb again now so I might go lie down for a while. good luck to everyone with their study and assignments and stuff for uni, or work or whatever you all are up to :) ciao david!
Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2003 8:50 AM Subject: v5.0 Long days, short cuts, shoestrings. Hi dudes/dudettes, So its time for another exciting update from dorking dave. (please hold your applause until the end, thank you). Right now my weekdays are full of work, trying to sleep in the sunlight, getting lost (quite literally - it got scary tonight when it was 10:30 and I had no idea where I was, I didn't realise it would get so dark after about 10pm, and my shortcut home didn't turn out to be quite so short...) in the hills and towns of Surrey riding my bike. Either tomorrow evening or wednesday morning I'll be flying to Stockholm for an installation job for one of work's big customers. Unfortunately it means I am now going to miss out on the Bon Jovi and Live concert in Hyde Park on Saturday which I had just won a ticket on eBay for :( OH well, I can't complain too much - a free trip to Stockholm ain't too bad I guess, but its annoying since its been put off for so many weeks that it would finally land on the weekend I didn't want it to. Typical! I have much travel ahead which I'm looking forward to immensely, though unfortunately it means I'm scraping the money barrel every day to try to save enough money for when I leave work. Though it brings me pleasure to note that the current exchange rate is about $4 - 1, so if I have any money left when I get home (not likely, but you never know) maybe I'll be able to pay off my debts and have enough left over to buy a wedding present for Em and Goat! I saw the film Identity on Sunday, was good I thought, kept me thinking which I like. You should all check it out - Amanda Peet proves why she's been at the top of my list for a while (beaten only by Natalie Imbruglia when in form). Wimbledon started today of course - so all we've heard about is 1) Tiger Tim Henman (I can't imagine a more inappropriate nickname for someone), and 2) Lleyton Hewitt losing. This is especially bad since we just lost the Rugby to England as well - they are starting to get big heads, and it is just not cool to be getting beaten by the poms. fortunately we still have the football (soccer) and cricket to make a point with. Not really knowing many people, and especially no-one my own age (except you Jacqui, but then you ARE a fair bit older anyway...) is getting really hard at the moment. So you people who haven't sent me an email - send one NOW, as soon as you read this, to at least say hello. It can't be that hard! Be warned... the email karma beast (of yore) will come get you if you don't!! Of course I guess I'll meet endless people on my travels in a couple of months, SO, until I find better ones you all are the only friends/family I've got - stop being slack, you know who you are! Well I must be off, much mroe I could talk about but I have clothes to hang out (exciting huh, but it IS midnight and I have no clothes to wear tomorrow). Have a good week y'all, each and every one. David
v3.1, v4.0 = some more emails gone missing!!!
Sent: Friday, July 04, 2003 7:46 AM Subject: v5.1 Its time to Stock up... (at holm) and Fill Yer Boots with Poo Hej!! First of all everyones who is emailing, muchos gracias, I'm totally behind though in emails for this last fortnight because I'm snowed under from work where I am putting in extra hours and just crashing when I get home. I will catch up soon though I promise. This is just a quick update... more detail in those personal emails, except for you other lazy sods! I got back monday evening from stockholm. I can report that its a great place. The swedish are really nice people and life is made easier by the fact that they all try really hard with their english and, since my swedish ain't great, that made communication a pleasent and less frustrating experience. The job we were doing in stockholm went relatively smoothly and I found that installing 117 phone sockets and a telephone system isn't all boring since it was a nice quiet place, I had the walkman, and the expansive timber floors made indoor cricket a necessity for two aussies. I got to see quite a bit of stockholm on the weekend too, though steve was sick, and I ended up with sore feet and a used up roll of film. In other news: - Today I heard MotorAce (good Melbourne band for all you uninitiated) twice on the radio which was a nice surprise (Stereophonics and The Coral seem to own the radio station I listen to over here though otherwise - which isn't all bad). The other Aussie music that gets played is Kylie and Danii, INXS and of course if you're walking past an aussie pub at the right time... the Chisel's Khe Sanh. - Camille is in London for a few weeks for some study so hopefully we'll get a chance to catch up soon and I can hear all the latest goss from Brisvegas. - The weather has gone to shit as you can probably tell from the Wimbledon coverage...speaking of which: - Go the poo! I don't remember if I said this in my last email or not but Steve and I put money on Mr Scud to win wimbledon at just under 20-1!!! So now he's beaten agassi and popp and into the semis and his odds have dropped down to about 4-1. If he goes all the way Steve and will win 150 between us. Not bad since I gained sufficient satisfaction from seeing Henman lose today to replace any lost betting moneys. - On Tuesday I got paid (Remember over here I'm getting paid cash, and the country gets paid monthly) and seriously the smell of the large stack of 20 notes is wafting out of my bedroom into the hallway (only slightly overpowering the smell of the large stack of dirty washing in the corner). - Plans continue to blossom with TL (team leader or total loser...you decide) Jacqui for our trip - though we are both struggling to maintain savings levels to ensure our extreme pampering needs are to be met. But don't worry too much, even if we can't fly first class all the time (can you believe its not even offered on many international flights across europe - how appalling) I hear that business class is quite alright these days. - I don't want to freak too many people out, (mum and dad - hi!) but I've been looking at some options for my return schedule and some of the jobs on offer in the US and Canada are looking rather intriguing to say the least, but thats very much in the pipeline right now and I am missing home alot, so we'll just have to wait and see eh? Heaps more things to share, in fact I think of things to send in emails everyday but forget them pretty much straight away. Still, tonight I ended up writing more than I expected, but now I really need to go to bed (beauty sleep don't ya know). have a GREAT friday everyone and an even better weekend. farvl min kamrats
