· Here's try#6 (after 5:15 a.m. Mon.) :-

At 17:16 11/5/2001 -0400, Bill Ellis sent-on from Alan D. Moore of
Butterflies Not Bombs:
> ...
>Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. ...

· This shows one way the current culture is created.

· Make an off-hand statement that confirms the opinion of the person
reading or hearing it.

· Another is to hear an "authority figure" like The President of The United
States saying something like (though I couldn't find it): "We will protect
our way of life!", in the context of ensuring there's plenty of oil flowing.

· Such assumptions must be challenged.
Assumptions should _always_ be out in the open. It's all very well,
building a great edifice of logically consistent reasoning, but if it's
based on false assumptions, both the edifice and its conclusions are
rotten, totally useless.

· In this case, the assumption that the US _needs_ a hundred thousand
one-person gasoline-fuelled cars travelling (in many cases) large
distances, most days, is by no means true; just imagine how the US economy
is going to be run after oil (petroleum) _is_ really virtually gone. (In my
lifetime, I suspect.)
The assumption is not only simple-minded, it's false.
