  An old mate of mine dropped in to the office yesterday and as we
invariably do we got into a bit of brainstorming. We reckoned that the
Agricultural Industry of NZ spends around $2B p.a. on chemicals. 
  99.9% of this chemical use is detrimental to the ecological
sustainability to our future.
  If the Government were to put $1B into Organic agriculture each year it
would produce considerable benefits. Especially in employment. The $1B
would be an investment that could easily be returned in business
development, exports and primarily in absorbing a considerable number of
unemployed. The benefits from employment alone cumulatively would be more
than $1B. Less crime, less crime-busters, greater self esteem, more small
business intiatives, etc etc etc etc. That would be a great exercise for
those large accounting firms to research, when they've finished researching
the economic benefits to Auckland of the America's Cup.
