[pf] Dodge ESX3 hybrid car: aluminum 1.5-l, 3-cyl diesel + electric motor

** This is not advertising a car, in spite of what it looks like. It's
saying that using a lithium ion battery pack (from France) ups the price
compared with Toyota's gas-electric hybrid, but seems to lower the weight
so less battery energy is needed to accelerate, or go uphill.

...
In developing the Dodge ESX3 concept car, DaimlerChrysler drew on ...
the U.S. National Laboratories and other federal agencies and departments,
university-based researchers and private industry. Many of those
collaborators are part of the government-industry Partnership for a New
Generation of Vehicles (PNGV) ...
Several major suppliers worked closely with DaimlerChrysler in the
development of ESX3.
Detroit Diesel and Delphi Automotive Systems were key suppliers for the
DaimlerChrysler ESX3's hybrid powertrain. The aluminum 1.5-liter,
3-cylinder direct-injection diesel engine, constructed by Detroit Diesel,
reduces emissions while accentuating performance and efficiency.
Delphi developed the system's electric traction motor and controller.
SAFT, the French battery maker, provided the lithium ion battery pack
that is considerably lighter and smaller compared with the lead acid
batteries in ESX2. By minimizing the size of the battery pack, designers
and engineers were able to increase the interior volume of ESX3.
Development of the mild hybrid powertrain for the ESX3 ...
** And from:
http://us.media.daimlerchrysler.com/special/esx3/overview_e.htm :-
With ESX3, DaimlerChrysler engineers and designers have cut the cost
penalty for a high-mileage vehicle in half in just two years. The ESX2 from
1998 cost about $15,000 more than a comparable gasoline-powered car; with
the ESX3, the cost differential is about $7,500.
