http://www.sit.ac.nz/zero-fees.htm leads to: http://www.sit.ac.nz/zero-fee-press-release-27-sep-.htm , of Sep.27 last year, which is: Zero Fee Press Release David Carter Invercargill City Council Councillor Convenor of the Southland Joint Funders Committee Convenor of the Southland Joint Funders Committee, David Carter, confirms that $7.25 million has been either approved or nominally agreed-to by the various Southland funding organisations for the Southern Institute of Technology proposal to enable zero fees for students from 2001. Part of the funders' contributions are for capital development to be undertaken by Southern Institute of Technology. The funding breakdown is: Community Trust of Southland $ 3,452,390 Invercargill Licensing Trust $ 1,726,195 Invercargill City Council $ 1,208,365 Southland District Council $ 345,220 (to be confirmed) Corporates $ 345,220 (to be confirmed) Gore District Council $ 172,610 (to be confirmed) Total: $7,250,000 The zero fees proposal is estimated to attract an additional 717 equivalent students to Southern Institute of Technology in 2001, to bring the Institute up to a total roll of 2,500 equivalent full-time students. By 2003 the Institute is expected to have gained an additional 1,113 EFTS and total roll of approximately 3,000 students. The increase in student numbers will assist SIT to continue its development of nationally recognised quality programmes and centres of excellence in the disciplines of technology, health, tourism/outdoor recreation and performing arts. The Southland community recognises the need for a highly qualified and skilled workforce to enhance New Zealand's economic recovery, in which the Southland region is currently leading the way. The Southland community further acknowledges that financial barriers to tertiary education have impacted on students and their families from all sectors of the community. The provision of zero-fees tertiary programmes is expected to enhance educational opportunities for all students including non-traditional users of tertiary education. Flow on economic benefits from the increased number of students at SIT have been estimated by an independent economist as generating $11.5 million in additional business turnover for the community in 2001 and increasing by a further 50% in 2003. The commitment of the Southland funders, local authorities and the public to the zero fees proposal illustrates the cooperative and innovative attitudes that are a hallmark of the Southland community. SIT is now accepting applications for 2002 under the new zero-fees policy environment. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - sent on to Positive Futures by David.
