Subject: Pierce Simplicity Study
...
I wanted to let you know of a few things, so here we go.
(1) I will be conducting some all-day simplicity workshops in the next few
months in Northern California. The first one is in Carmel, CA on May 13th.
I hope to do several in the SF bay area in the next few months. If any of
you who live in this area are interested in attending or know others who
may want to, you can get info on the workshops on the Gallagher Press web
site:
www.gallagherpress.com under News & Events, or just contact me by email.
(2) Speaking of email, my address has changed to
pierce@gallagherpress.com
(3) When I do talks on simplicity, I always end with a statement that
expresses my personal passion and purpose in life. After the talk, I often
get requests for a copy of that statement. It isn't really all that
special, just my hopes for a better world. Since people seem to like it, I
thought I would share it with you. It is [below]. Feel free to pass it
along to anyone you want.
(4) The online discussion group for the simplicity study participants ...
[if you were a participant but didn't get Linda Pierce's e-mail, tell me or
her. D.]

1. I live for the day when we in America spend our leisure laughing and
sharing with friends and family instead of maintaining homes that we can
hardly enjoy because we are working so hard to pay for them.
2. I live for the day when we in America say no to jobs that drain us
physically and emotionally, killing off our spirits year after year, only
to prove to ourselves and our peers that we have achieved the so-called
American dream.
3. I live for the day when there are no more school shootings because our
parents have the time, energy and skills to nurture their children and
build their self-esteem.
4. I live for the day when we in America get enough sleep on a regular
basis, and for the day when eating well and exercising our bodies is a
pleasurable part of our lives.
5. I live for the day when we in America reconnect with our spiritual
selves and enjoy the creative outpouring that flows from that connection.
6. I live for the day when we in America reduce our current consumption
of 20% of the earth's nonrenewable resources to more closely match the 5%
that our population warrants.
7. I live for the day when we in America buy economy cars for $20,000 or
less instead of luxury cars for $50,000 or more, not because we think we
should, but because it gives us much more pleasure to spend that extra
$30,000 helping people who lack food, clean water, and healthcare.

** Note #6 above; Linda says Americans should cut use of nonrenewable
resources by 75%, to 25%, on average. Assuming the poorest 1/3 can't cut by
more than a tiny amount, the richer 2/3 of Americans should try to live on
17% of the nonrenewable resources they use now. _One_sixth!_ That includes
all petroleum products, both gasoline-and-heating-fuel _and_plastics_.
** The assumption that their current way of life (but just buying cars
with double the fuel economy) would leave everything OK, is derisory,
ludicrous.
** And US citizens (& all others) who import food and products that need
water from other parts of the world, are committing not only theft, they
are creating famine there. When you hear of widespread illness, it's _very_
often because the good water has gone to the people and businesses that can
pay for it, leaving only polluted and infectious water for the people you
hear are dying. My 10-y.o. daughter in India in 1988 made a good friend her
age, there, who could be dead of such an illness, now.
