Re: ... my ascetic lifestyle ... telling them about my extremism would put
them off.
** I won't do much more than give references to webpages, since I am using
myself as a guinea-pig for an economics experiment. On my main page:

I say (after giving my worldview and personal actions):
"I'm not recommending others do the above, though I am saying it's possible."
** That is, by paying little or no attention to my own wishes, I have been
able (for the last 6 years) to live on less than US$900 per year for
everything, while sharing the costs of a wholly-paid-for house. I do little
or nothing, by choice. Especially note the reference to my extremely
restricted diet: same every day, and no cooking (except of the bread I buy).
See:

Note the focus on finding the "zero option" for economics. That's
the experiment.
** That income is (two thirds of) the interest coming from investing the
US$12,000 of teachers' pension fund that I built up while teaching from
1981 to 1989 (the 5% of my salary that went into it was matched $1 for $1
by our employer). Earlier I had been a Physics lecturer in Canada and Africa.
** After looking at the top part of my main page above, follow the links
starting with: "Celebrating ... 6 ! (six) YEARS of minimal existence !!" on:

for the rest of the story, including the part played by what I regard
as minor brain damage from 10 minutes of concussion (fell off a bicycle
while doubling a hurt child home - no helmet - child had no additional
hurt), which produced (with teaching over-stress) frequent quick anger that
nearly broke up my family. It's one of the reasons I do nothing, still.
** Sorry to bore/annoy those who've heard it all before.
David.
