lists and volunteering to be a member of this alternative network in case
we need it.

· That's a good idea for samizdat; I hope it doesn't get to that, but I
agree we should have the capability for making it work if necessary.
· And as I said { http://csf.colorado.edu/mail/pfvs/2001IV/msg00772.html },
"while tully and Jill are around we _can_ stay connected."
· tully said ".. will at least slow down the ability of any over-anxious
intelligence types to back-track email to their sources since ... they will
have to get warrants from ISPs to get that information or will have to
contact the last person on the email track".
There are quite a lot of ways to encode messages between a small number
of people, e.g. based on a letter-circulated or phoned "word-of-the-day"
(or week), that would allow us to send machine-encyphered letters, to be
decyphered by each person on the private list. (I can get a second-hand
Webster if necessary, for exact spelling.)
· Harder to do, but less obvious, is the buried-word method, where (say)
every 4th word is in the message, and the filler ones in between are just
there to make the whole letter seem innocuous. A 12-word real message of
that sort could be described by the numbers: 4444 4444 4444, while a
fancier version would include these 3 numbers in it somewhere (in this
order): 3572 2869 4715 (the actual numbers giving the location of each real
message word in the camouflage message).
This would allow us to continue using the internet.
· I believe modem-to-modem, unless each person has 3-way-calling
(daisy-chain), is quite hard to keep doing, and should be kept for a last
resort.
Also, I have Windows 95 without Hyperterminal. (-Communications- just has
"Internet Connection Wizard".)
>In this new McCarthyism era, I might also suggest here that we make a
special point to take off all email references to the senders of original
articles, leaving only the link to the original article in place. I would
ask that this please be done for me if you forward any articles or messages
that I sent to the list. Please remove any references to tully on any
emails that you forward from this list. It is even more important that we
do this to protect the more radical people on this list ...

· Clarification: "email references" means the actual e-mail addresses, I
believe. So the acknowledgement, giving the name (the webname) of the
person posting the item, is OK. What about a messed-up version of the
e-mail address? Here are 3:
- on Tripod.com : da-@ihug.co.nz
groups.yahoo.com : davd@i...
- me, sometimes : .-.-.@ihug.co.nz
David.
