· I am not recommending ICQ (at least just now).

· My preference, if there's going to be a need to download 0.6 MB (or more)
of software (for Gnutella or ICQ), is (i) that it be extremely easy to use
(just a few clicks, maybe type in some data {like ID}, and you're on), and
(ii) that it be fairly small - a "Lite" version - which ICQ has. For this
last, though, it still has bugs (it's the "alpha", not even "beta"), and
you apparently have to already have an ICQ number (& password) before you
get it.

· I'm not sure how far I want to take this investigation; I'll probably do
more after the weekend (my family monopolise this computer those two days).
I also seem to remember a time, before the World Wide Web began, when
there were BBS's (Bulletin Boards), and before that, when you telephoned
someone, got them to switch-in their modem, and used a direct
computer-to-computer connection.

David.
