She lived with people who were not money-focussed. Tully's "My vacation (long)" post is: http://csf.colorado.edu/mail/pfvs/2000/msg06049.html - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - At 12:20 19/6/2001 +1200, someone on the GV-NZ list in northern NZ wrote, with Subject: [GV]Fires in the North Hi everybody, The deaths by fire up here are not particularly associated with poor housing but associated with the use of exposed flames without strongly enforced codes, such as not leaving children in control of naked flames such as candles, and smokers coming home from a party being careless with their butts [probably]. The fire four years ago that killed three children was in an area without electrical supply. The building was not particularly flash but probably did not contribute to the cause of the the fire. The eldest person was a school age boy and the cause of the fire was probably a candle. The Herekino fire that killed children a few weeks ago was in an old but not particularly flimsy house , which was wired for electricity but had not been connected by its latest tenants, probably because of the initial costs involved. The eldest person was a schoolboy and the cause of the fire was probably a candle. The most recent fire causing the death of a man at the weekend , involved a house that was fifty years old and in quite sturdy condition but never been connected to electricity, by the choice of the owners. The only person involved was a man who had been at another address socialising until a few hours previously. The most likely cause of the fire was a neglected flame or cigarette, after the man had fallen asleep. I think a concern about the use of candles and other naked flames is justified. Modern families do not seem to have the strict codes toward the use of candles that an earlier generation practised. One of the problems of refugees from the city 'living rough' in rural areas is the lack of knowledge and skills in such areas as fire lighting, precautions with fire (such as always lighting lanterns out on the porch), etc. I think the desire to be independent of the electricity system is quite strong in this part of the country, but the desire for independence from the cash system is not always balanced with the knowhow required. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - sent-on by David.
