[pf] 'a hotter summer and will need air conditioned shelters' ?

· While compiling my Asia-Pacific Regional Report I was stopped in my
tracks by this statement:
"Emergency managers want to know how many storms to prepare for, whether we
will have a hotter summer and will need air conditioned shelters, or a
colder winter, during which we might need more heating oil," Commerce
Secretary Norman Mineta said.
· What's this mean:
"a hotter summer and will need air conditioned shelters"?
{· The news article is:
"Floating Sensors Track Oceans' Role in Climate Change"
at:
http://ens.lycos.com/ens/sep2000/2000L-09-19-15.html }
· It seems to me to mean that State Emergency Managers are now expected to
set up something like air-raid or other disaster shelters to be used in the
middle of hot days, for ambulances to take people to who are suffering heat
exhaustion. Then these people go home in the evenings. The main feature of
these shelters, besides the roof, is that they're air-conditioned.
· Is that right?
· What's wrong with sitting outside under a leafy tree with a cold drink
and a hand-fan? Or if that's not enough, taking a 30-second cold shower?
Not wasting yet more oil-fired electricity on air-conditioned "shelters"!
David.
