· Car-free "city", anyone? I haven't heard of anything similar to this
example in Melbourne, in the USA. Is there anything, anywhere? D.

Melbourne to have major 'green' suburb
[posted: ] 27/04/2001

MELBOURNE, April 26 - A major new "green" suburb is planned for Melbourne's
North, boasting the latest in energy efficiency and water re-cycling.

The new urban development project will be the largest undertaken by the
Urban Land Corporation and the Victorian Government boasts it will set new
standards for environmentally friendly development.

"The project will create a new suburb at Epping North for 8000 households,
ultimately accommodating 25,000 people," Minister for Planning, John
Thwaites, said.

The Epping North development will be a model of environmentally friendly
design, including:

§ Energy efficiency
§ Reusing and recycling water
§ Reducing waste
§ Reducing car dependence.

The development will be designed so people can walk through it rather than
relying on a car.

Over a 15 year period, ULC expenditure will be in excess of $300 M and the
project will have an end value of approximately $1.8 Billion.

"The development will create a new suburb for Melbourne and is situated to
the west of the existing township of Epping just 20 kilometres from the
CBD. "It is anticipated that construction works will commence in mid to
late 2001 with land to be offered for sale early in 2003.

According to reports, the suburb will feature a small, discrete water
treatment plant costing up to $20 million enabling the community to reuse
water for watering gardens and flushing toilets.
