At 08:37 3/10/2001 +1200, Richard Selinkoff sent to GV-NZ, Subject: [GV]American foreign policy :- The following is an exerpt from a lecture given in 1951 by George Kennan, America's Grand Strategist for the Cold War, author of the strategy of Containment, which most scholars credit with winning the Cold War, and which most scholars speculate would have won it a whole lot earlier if it hadn't been for such deviations from the strategy as the Vietnam War: [The U.S. government is] "uncomfortably similar to one of those pre-historic monsters with a body as long as this room and a brain the size of a pin: he lies there in his comfortable primeval mud and pays little attention to his environment; he is slow to wrath - in fact, you practically have to whack his tail off to make him aware that his interests are being disturbed; but, once he grasps this, he lays about him with such blind determination that he not only destroys his adversary but largely wrecks his native habitat." This was a right-winger talking in 1951. But an intelligent one scornful of the Standard American Bullshit.
