· This is the only list I know of where there'd be this response; great!

· I only had the time to do that thinking-then-writing by getting up at
4:30 a.m. (having gone to bed at 8:30-9:00 p.m.), but now it's just after
2:30 in the afternoon and I don't have much time before the others return
and take this computer.

· So I'll just say that the "we must abide by the rules" conviction, while
enabling diverse people to get along, is not conducive to having the
creative responses to one's surroundings that provide the best route toward
long-term success (or at least survival). IMO.
And that's independent of the "_who_ sets the rules?" discussion.

· Once again, "the golden mean", "moderation in all things" etc.; in this
case, a balance between order and a chaotic environment are necessary for
the surfacing (and expression) of those creative responses.

humans don't use most of their brains until under pressure to do so."

I don't think cookie-cutter landscapes equates with cookie-cutter residents.
Maybe suburbs are the symptom, rather than the cause.

time the earlier licence expires. I would prefer to let the situation drag
on, using my old licence until I turn 72 (re-test needed) or until I get
arrested for driving without "a licence". My wife says she's not willing to
be driven in a car where that might happen with her in it, ..

I'm with Bera. If you want to drive her, then get the licence; if you
don't, then don't. (Does she drive?)
** For years I've seen myself as strictly a chauffeur (someone who keeps
the fire stoked, in the earliest steam-powered cars), willing to drive Bera
(usually) to or from some place when she wants someone else to drive; yes
she can, but doesn't enjoy it at all; and some evenings the car is here,
and she is there, at the end of the bus route. You're right, I'll get the
licence.
 [MW: ]
I'm confused on the "deadline" aspect of this issue.
** I didn't say, but the old "lifetime" licence has been made (by the
1990s government) to expire in a few months, so for easy replacement I have
to apply soon. I would prefer to live in the uncertainty of (i) whether I'd
be picked up, and (ii) whether I'd have to go through the complete theory
and practical re-test ...

** Sorry; got to go, they've arrived.
