San Francisco -- San Franciscans will soon get a chance to show if they
can share and share alike when an urban car-sharing program finally opens
in the city.

The idea, born out of frustration with the high cost of owning and
operating a car and finding a place to park in the city, is pretty simple,
say advocates of a program that has already taken root in such other West
Coast cities as Portland and Seattle.

Instead of owning a car, members of City CarShare pay fees and share the
costs, and get dedicated parking places. For people who only need a car a
few days a week it's a bargain, organizers say.

``This is the perfect place for this,'' said CarShare's executive director
Elizabeth Sullivan. ``Plenty of people are tired of hassling with their
cars and want to do the right thing environmentally.''

Car sharing isn't new in the Bay Area. A University of California at Davis
pilot project offered shared vehicles at the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station
and Hertz has a program of shared leased vehicles at BART's Fremont
station, said BART's Mike Healy.

Under the Hertz plan, one person drives the vehicle to the station in the
morning from home and takes BART to work. Another person arriving on BART
at the station then drives the vehicle to work for the day. The process is
reversed in the evening.

Hertz plans to introduce electric vehicles for its share program, Healy
added.

The group can be reached at www.sfcarshare.org or at 415-995-8588.
