How to check your VCR now:

Set the VCR clock to 11.50pm, 31 December 1999.
Programme it to tape something in 20 minutes and see whether the clock has
rolled over.
If the VCR performs as programmed, it has no problems.

How to keep your VCR working after 31 Dec. 1999:

If the VCR doesn't recognise the year 2000 you can get around this problem
by (in Jan. next year) setting the date to 1972. This is because 1972 and
2000 match the same days and dates and they are both leap years.
