· I agree with your opinion, Diane. It does apply to all families with children. However, IMO there would be a notably smaller number of adults (someone capable of deciding to be an anarchist) in a guardianship relationship with children, in a sustainable future, IMO.
  So fewer would be affected by your reasoning, than now.

{· Just to make it clear: I believe a truly sustainable _and_enjoyable_ future will take several generations (5?) to reach, in each of them the average family size being _less_ than replacement, so the world population eventually (150 years?) levels off at 4-6 billion, below its 9-10 billion peak. It's the ~85 million net increase per year currently, which is taking us up to the 9 (hopefully) or 12 (possible) peak world population. I consider a 30 million _decrease_ per year (115 million change from current) as quite possible, but requiring the whole world to be focussed on achieving
it. This may require "having children" to be frowned-on by most people. With
the result that I describe above (fewer families will include children).}

What I (and many people) fear in your scenario, David, is not what the guy with the gun does to me, but what he does with the gun to my children -- and a quick death is the second-least worry.

It is hard for a parent to ask their children to suffer and die for one's principles.  And sometimes the suffering and dying has nothing to do with principles, but to do with only a crazed person's idea of how he wants to gratify himself.
