This is a great organization to work with. Of all the service groups, I got my compensation through the support of Chapter 28. Chapter 28 still needs to fill several officer positions. Please review the list below: Adjutant (alternate) Officer of the Day Sgt At Arms Chapter Historian Publicity Officer Entertainment Officer Color Guards Editor of Newsletter Hospital Chairperson Please Volunteer; it really doesnt take that much of your time. Lastly, please invite a friend(s) to come with you or invite a friend to visit our website. You can make a difference. Please help us to become the best we can be, for an Organization and for the Veterans. __________________________________________________ AUXILIARY NEWS It does not seem possible that the year has past and it is time for Installation of Officers on May 14th, 2003. We will have a joint DAV/DAVA Potluck for evening meal. Bring your favorite dish and join us on this important occasion to share the fellowship and congratulate the officers taking office for the coming year. We need lots of assistance in both the DAV and DAVA regarding Veterans care and other issues due to budget cuts and lack of funding. The Auxiliary states BE AS ACTIVE AS YOU WANT TO BE. Some people have more time to donate than others, but if everyone would help as much as they can it all adds up. Renew your pledge to the DAV/DAVA today and mark your calendar for the following upcoming events: May 14 -- DAV/DAVA Meeting and Installation of Officers. Please plan to attend. May 23 & 26 Place and Remove Flags on Veterans Graves at Valley View Cemetery. June 6-8 -- State Convention at Wichita. Christine Cornelius Unit #28 Commander REMEMBER MAKE EVERY DAY VETERANS DAY! __________________________________________________ From the Adjutants Saddlebags Craig Mad Mac McLean I may or may not be around as Adjutant this next 12 months; I have a lot of ''irons in the fire.'' But I would like to offer some observations I've made over the past 12 months, whether they are popular or not. (1.) I totally support Forget-Me-Not fundraisers; they allow us to take in donations we can turn around and use to help veterans---a VERY worthwhile endeavor. But that's the key! Monies must be used to help veterans in general---we cannot use any of what we take in to directly support our own Chapter activities. With ZERO income these days, I would like to see our Chapter spend no MORE time on F-M-N drives than we ALSO spend on acquiring donations/monies that we can use to improve Manhattan Chapter 28 directly and to assist our own members more. If we dont look out for Chapter 28 FIRST, who will?? Same for the VFW. Our annual donation to them for letting us hold meetings in their building needs to be balanced against what we can realistically afford to contribute in appreciation for this support. (2.) For our members who can't get to monthly meetings for one reason or another, the Newsletter is our only way of staying in regular touch. If we can't stay in touch with all of our own family, we've lost our base. I'd like to see us work hard to get back to producing a Newsletter more than just two times a year! (3.) I have a lot of other things on my Wish List, but will close with saying I'd just like to see more members joining in at regular meetings and activities. We have over 340 members on paper, but too few at regular meetings to really get the ball rolling as well as we might. If you have never been to a meeting before, it might just be YOU we've been needing all along! Make a point of picking out at least one, or maybe two, meetings you can get to this coming year. If even HALF of our membership could do this, I bet it would make a HUGE difference for you AND for the rest of us! (And please call any of our officers if you ever need to arrange transportation. I don't drive all that well myself anymore, so it is certainly no big deal to say you could use a ride to a meeting!!!!! Someone will be happy to help out!) A final, SPECIAL thanks to all our Chapter ''regulars'' (and that goes for our super DAV Auxiliary, too!) who have always helped us to be a fun and productive Chapter together!! You all know who you are!!! MM = ) __________________________________________________ Memorial Day From the Ft. Riley, Kansas website: http://www.riley.army.mil This year, Memorial Day will be observed on 26 May. For some, this day will provide a three-day break from work and signal the beginning of summer. To others, this year's Memorial Day will be a reminder of what this day was originally about. With soldiers deployed from Fort Riley and many in harm's way in far off corners of the world, the day will have added significance and meaning. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. This day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Sinced 1966, Memorial Day has been observed on the last Monday of May to coincide with other Federal holidays. The observance of this day of remembrance and tribute has often been one of mixing the meaning of the day with outside activities. This is not a recent phenomenon as evidenced by a letter, appearing in the Junction City (Kansas) "Daily Union" in May 1903. The letter, written by a Civil War veteran, reads in part: "Your announcement...of [a big racing event at Fort Riley] is a subject of deep regret...The 30th day of May is the Nation's Passover...sacred to the memory of those who died on land and on seas that this nation might live; the day on which all loyal citizens lay aside their daily avocations and in loving and grateful memory bedeck their low green mounds with the pure blossoms of spring...The day is also a national holiday, time honored, patriotically and piously observed, on which the graves in the national cemeteries are decked with earth's purest offerings...citizens and soldiers alike should reverently observe the day in the spirit in which it was intended to inspire the youth of our land to emulate the brave men whose memory we perpetuate and inculcate the very highest patriotism." Perhaps, as we prepare to observe this year's Memorial Day - and those in the future, these words can be our guidepost. __________________________________________________ A SPECIAL THANKS to all our Chapters CHARTER SPONSORS below (for generous financial donations): Floyd Clark Harvey L.
