MAY 15 The 747 we flew was really big! We met a guy on his way to Tunis, Morocco. To him it was part of his job. We both got a couple hours sleep. Our dinner was served at midnight, and was a really nice piece of beef, baked potato, roll, cake with whipped cream and a bottle of white wine, I won't bother to describe the fish or whatever it was they served as well.
MAY 16 We boarded the bus for Bath at Heathrow Airport, 9:35am. A girl named Rhonda sat next to us and talked incessantly all the way to Bath! A regular rebel type, even rolled her own cigs. Checked our cases at Bath bus station, and went for light lunch at the Monk's Restaurant in the Abbey courtyard, scrambled eggs, toast and tea. Gina met us, she came early, no problem. Brought a car for us to use while in England. We gave out presents in the evening and then went to the Tyning Inn from Gina's place. I got drunk on 3 gin and tonics! I really adore all of them!! They're even more super than David said, if that's possible.
MAY 17 Went into Bath today. Went through Roman Baths--very impressive! Sat in the Pump Room and listened to a trio playing violin, cello and piano. Had tea and a Bath Bun in a Norwegian place in the corridor. Beautiful weather. Stopped in Midsomer Norton to pick up Scotch Eggs, Cornish Pasties and junk food. Had tea with mum and dad then went to Gina's to call my mom, talked all of 4 mins. Sat and looked at old family photo's and Bob rang from Brighton, there were bagpipes playing in the background! Clayton and Jason refused to go to bed, they were afraid they would miss something.
MAY18 Weather was absolutely gorgeous today, big white fluffy clouds. Went to Cheddar and Wells. Saw caverns, enormous cliffs and bought clotted cream, REAL Cheddar cheese and farm butter. Visited the REAL Cheddar cheese factory! In Wells saw Cathedral, Bishop's Palace and walked up the battlements. Had lunch at the Rose & Crown pub - cheese, bread and butter, Branston Pickle, pickled eggs. Had cup of tea in Priory Inn. Came home long enough for tea, picked Bob up and went pub crawling until met Gina & Maureen at Stones Cross pub. Got smashed again went home and raided fridge.
MAY 19 Got up early and went to Longleat. We took mum and dad. Joined the guided tour of the house, we reckoned we walked 1 1/2 miles through the house, it's that big! We had a cup of tea in the café, then went to the Garden Center where we bought mum a potted plant . From there we went to Stourhead. It's a huge landscaped garden area, gorgeously laid out with footpaths and stone temples scattered about. It started to rain half way round our walk but we managed to keep from getting too wet. Went home and had tea. David and I went to the Dolphin Inn a local pub, John Smith Lager is having a giveaway if you match badges with the same guys name on it. You get a free pint with whoever you match with. Of all things, both our badges matched with 2 others in the bar. I didn't want my drink, a girl named Sue bought me a pickled egg and a packet of chips. It really amazes me how friendly all the people in the pubs are. You're never left a stranger no matter where you go. I'm really going to miss that when I go home.
MAY 20 Took mum and dad to Bath to do some shopping. It rained on and off all day, still had a good time. Booked our hotel in London for next week. Came home and ate an enormous tea of pork pies, tomatoes, cheese, Branston pickle, mixed salad, crusty buns and chips. Took a brief nap and went to a 15th century pub in Litton called King Williams Arms. Talk about atmosphere and antiquity! The stone floors, small doorways, babbling brook running alongside made my eyes bug out with wonder and awe!! Picked Gina up. Gina's friend Rose came with us pub crawling! First we went to Ring of Roses in Holcombe, then to the Crown in Clapton. The landlord was really uptight and closed the pub early because his son had been sent to jail for DWI and no insurance. Stopped at the Junkboat restaurant in Midsomer Norton for Chinese, took it to Gina's and talked until 1:15am. Another superb day I won't soon forget!
MAY 21 Had a lazy morning and left home at 2pm for Castle Combe. It's a very small old English village, very quaint, very old!! Drove around the countryside, and went to Lacock, another old place!! Came home, had our tea, got cleaned up and went out with Gina and Bob to the Jolly Collier and the Ring Of Roses pubs. Picked up more Chinese, went to Gina and Bobs and watched videos. I'm becoming a real alcoholic over here! Never mind, we're on holiday and we deserve it!
