VIRGO

 

A very large constellation, representing Astræa – the goddess of justice, daughter of Jupiter and Themis.  The ‘bowl’ of Virgo abounds in faint galaxies.  Of the 9 stars down to the fourth magnitude, Spica is an eclipsing variable over a small range (0.91 – 1.01), and g (Arich) used to be one of the most spectacular binary pairs in the sky, though it is closing up and will have become difficult to separate by the end of the 20th century.
