ERIDANUS

 

(Abbreviation:  Eri).

 

An immensely long constellation, extending from Achernar in the far south as far as Kursa, near Orion.  Achernar is the only brilliant star, though q (Acamar) was raned as the first magnitude in ancient times, and there are suggestions that it has faded.  Mythologically , Eridanus is the river Po – and this was the river into which the youth Phæthon was plunged he had obtained permission to drive the Sun-chariot for a day, and had lost control of it, so that Jupiter was forced to strike him down with a thunderbolt.
