CYGNUS

 

Cygnus is one of the richest constellations in the sky; it is often nicknamed the Northern Cross – certainly it is much more nearly cruciform then is Crus.  Various legends are associated with it.  According to one, the group was placed in the sky to honour a swan into which Jupiter once transformed himself when on a visit to the wife of the King of Sparta!  There are 13 stars above the fourth magnitude.  To these must be added the red variable c, which can rise above magnitude 4 at times.
