CASSIOPEIA

 

(Abbreviation: Cas).

 

An original constellation – one of the most distinctive in the sky.  Mythologically, Cassiopeia was Andromeda’s mother and wife of Cepheus; it was her boasting which led to the unfortunate contretemps with Neptune’s sea-monster.  There are seven stars above magnitude 4.  Of these,g (Cih) is variable, and is also suspected that a (Shedir) is variable over a small range – possibly 2.1 to 2.4 though opinions differ.  c, which looks obscure, is extremely luminous.  There are 8 stars brighter then magnitude 4:
