The Rose Mines of the San Bernardino Mountains Rose Mine Topo map
There are actually a number of mines throughout the valley which is essentially out in the middle of nowhere east of Baldwin Lake off of Highway 38.
Thrifty bastards those miners. These cart tracks are actually 1/8" strap iron laid out on a thin wood road bed.
Above Left:
Typical hole left from pnumatic drills.  Dynamite is placed in these holes to remove large amounts of rock.and occasionally a large amount of miners were removed when things went awry.  Every once in a while you'll come across a drill still stuck in the rock.  Thankfully we have yet to find any miner pieces stuck in the  rock.

Above Right:
A big variety in shoring techniques in the Rose mines.  Here are  some of the quick and nasty style supports with no nonsense timbers free of any conventional milling.

This sign speaks volumes but wasn't seen until we had explored nearly every shaft already.
Left:
I am never one to pass up an opportunity to post up furry woodland creatures.  These bats were puny and about the size and shape of small mice except boasting  wretched-nasty little bat faces.  All photos on this page are courtesy of Andrew and his Sony Mavica.  Click photos for greater detail.
Right:
This winze goes up about 40-50 feet up to a crator on the other side of the hill above the mine.  No ascention was a no-brainer here as evidenced by the rickety-ass ladder and equally rickety-ass abreviated scafolding. I did manage to come down about 25' from the top side only to find I had too little rope to make it to a safe level. Bummer.
Below:
As you can see here security is paramount.  This door kept out most trucks and all but the smallest of locomotives. I was mindfull to keep it closed because of flies and drafts.
Below:
It's true, folks will shoot at just about anything. This fashionable pot was found with 3 medium calibre holes in it.  The true fate of Johnny Appleseed revealed!
