My Spooky and Eerie Experience
My spooky and eerie experience happened just this past weekend. I live in Ventura County in California and we were having a typical Saturday, however, there was a fire behind us but it was many miles away. The eerie part was it started getting yellow and progressively smokier (not sure if that's a word) . Helicopters started flying over head and we still didn't give it much thought. We live at the top of a hill, the winds were blowing, and we have a big field behind us with mountains etc. Our neighbor called and said she could see flames. We went down the street to take a look and flames were burning over the hill and heading right towards us. (they were still kind of far away, but moving fast). As we were watching, two firefighters showed up to check it out, and their concern kind of rattled us. Then we noticed the streets below us were filled with fire trucks and firefighters. Then, suddenly we had six fire trucks on our street, firefighters running in and out of our backyards, telling us what we needed to do to protect our homes, closing doors, taking drapes down, etc. We started packing and my sons and friends and my husband started loading the pick ups with some very critical items, :) :) namely, their dirt bikes and my husbands motorcycle LOL. I ran around gathering important papers and pets. My younger son went to help some other people evacuate and I decided to leave with the pets. My husband was staying back for a bit. We live 2 minutes from the freeway and when I got there, the side of the freeway was on fire. I got on and drove about a 1/4 mile and there was another fire and the cars were backing up. There is only one other way out and it's primarily a one lane road and I was concerned my husband and older son could end up trapped if the fire got out of control. Needless to say, I called home and my husband and son reluctantly met me over at the high school. We stayed there, watched the flames burning off in the distance, not knowing where they were heading. The fire burnt down the hill behind our house, split and basically surrounded our sub, but the firefighters did an outstanding job and protected our subdivision. In some areas it burnt right up to the street, and homes, but everything was saved. We left around 4pm and at 11pm we heard from a neighbor who said the fire had passed and we could come home. Sunday was still touch and go with fires burning close by, but everything that I know of is OK. It was a horrible experience and my heart goes out to all the people who have lost their homes around the state and who have been affected by this fire.
Note: There could be some grammar problems, burned/burnt, etc,. but I hope that Miss Darylynn doesn't mark me down for them. :) :)
