2. Hardwick Hall (Near Chesterfield, Derbyshire)
The huge initials ES adorn the roof line of Hardwick proclaiming the house of Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury, the formidable 16th century landowner and businesswoman better known by her nickname Bess of Hardwick.
Bess was rich, gaining most of her riches built on her four marriages and was married for the last time in 1583 to head one of the oldest, grandest and richest families in England.
The house itself contains world-famous Elizabethan furniture and its walls are clothed with a huge area of fine tapestries.
A beautiful house set in beauifully ordained gardens surrounded by park land and well worth a vist.
