Rebecca Jane Beard was my great-great grandmother.

I did not include Robert Wilson Scott brother of Philip Bruce Scott, Sr. my great-great grandfather. Robert died during the war but a year after his discharge.

WAR OVER SLAVERY MYTH "No amendment shall be made to the Constitution which will authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere, within any State, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of persons held to labor or service by the laws of said State"
The U.S. Congress approved this amendment to the constitution on 2 Mar 1861, which can be verified at the U. S. House of Representatives web site .
The north was willing to amend the constitution to protect slavery to coax the seceding states back into the union. The war to prevent southern independence did not happen because the north wanted to free the slaves.

My ancestors survived their service

Philip Bruce Scott, Sr. My great-great grandfather, was a private in Co. G 2nd Texas Confederate Infantry Regiment. He enlisted 7 Sept 1861, was at the battle at Shiloh and was discharged 18 June 1862 for age and infirmity. He had been in the Texas Revolution in 1835 and arrived in Texas in 1831 with the Scott family.

Obituary

Robert S. Scott My great-great grandfather(not the source of my surname), was a corporal in Co. H 10th Texas Confederate Infantry Regiment He enlisted on 18 Oct 1861, was a prisoner at Camp Douglas from Jan to Apr of 1863, and his unit became part of Granbury's Brigade (Cleburne Division) after the exchange. He was wounded at Chickamauga, Ga. on 20 Sep 1863 and paroled at the end of the war on 20 May 1865. His wife was Rebecca Beard, mentioned above.

Seaborn Jones Barber My great-great grandfather, was a private in Co. D 4th Texas Confederate Cavalry Regiment He enlisted 25 June 1862. His wife was Frances Gardner, mentioned above.

Philip Bruce Scott, Jr. My great grandfather, was a private in Company C of Mann's Texas Confederate Cavalry Regiment. In May 1865, before hearing of Lee's surrender, Philip was in a cavalry force under famed Texas Ranger RIP Ford which defeated Federal forces at Palmito Ranch near Brownsville, TX.
