Letchworth State Park is one of the most spectacular gorges in all of the United States. It consists of three falls, The Upper, The Middle, and the Lower Falls extending over 17 miles in length.
There is a legend of a young Seneca Bride named Mon-a-sha-sha and her child that perished in the Letchworth Gorge. Legend has it that their spirits live today in the elusive albino deer of Letchworth State Park.
Mary Jemison, known as White Woman of the Genesee, was captured in Pennsylvania by the Seneca Indians and made to travel to the Genesee Valley in New York at the age of 15. When there was a treaty to release the whites, Mary chose to stay with the indians. She eventually married a Seneca Indian Chief, raised her children, and lived to the age of 90. A cabin that Mary built for her daughter has been moved to Letchworth State Park from Gardeau Flats along with a Seneca Counsel House. There is also a statue of Mary Jemison there at her place of burial.
