| 04/22/2003 Police seek woman's murderer By Chery Sabol The Daily Inter Lake Police say a 26-year-old woman found dead in a Kalispell motel last week was murdered. Autopsy results show that Darlene Wilcock of Kalispell was killed, probably Wednesday night or Thursday, said Sgt. Greg Burns, a detective with the Kalispell Police Department. He refused to reveal the cause of her death and said his department probably won't have more to say until someone is charged. He hopes for the public's help in the case, though. "We're going to ask for the media's help in this investigation," he said at a press conference Monday morning. Wilcock's body was found by a Motel 6 employee after noon Thursday. She checked into the room Wednesday evening and was last seen by relatives at about 6 p.m. Police ask anyone who saw or talked to her after then to call the police department or Crimestoppers. Burns would not discuss suspects or evidence in the case, but said police have "significant leads." Wilcock has lived in the valley for the past seven years or so, Burns said. She lived with her mother. Four siblings also reside in Kalispell, he said. Wilcock worked at Stream International and was engaged to be married, he said. When her body was found in a room on the second floor of Motel 6, the cause of her death was not apparent. "We had a hunch" that there might be foul play, Burns said, and the state medical examiner's autopsy confirmed that. The medical examiner is reluctant to speculate about when Wilcock died during the 18-hour time frame from when she was last seen until when her death was discovered. Burns is also reluctant to estimate a time of death, although he believes Wilcock had been dead for "at least a few hours" before she was found. He said crime-lab tests will show whether Wilcock was sexually assaulted. Information from the public could be helpful, he said. Until someone is arrested, "Everybody's a potential suspect," Burns said. |

Greg Burns. However, Burns said officers had very few calls from the public after their plea for information in the death of Darlene Wilcock, 26, of Kalispell. She was last seen alive at about 6 p.m. on April 16. Her body was found in a second-floor room by a Motel 6 employee after noon on April 17. Burns is looking for information from anyone who saw Wilcock after 6 p.m. on April 16. He has released little about the case, including the cause of death, possible suspects or whether there were any other crimes connected to the murder. Autopsy reports from the state crime laboratory in Missoula showed that Wilcock was murdered. Wilcock has lived in the valley for the past seven or eight years. She was employed and engaged to be married. Burns said Wednesday that he is still sending evidence to the crime lab for analysis. |
