BUELL
FAMILY IN THE CIVIL WAR
In my family, 5 of the Buell boys fought in the Civil War
for the Union: John, Horace, George, David, and James. Two of them,
John and Horace, did not return home. John died on July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg,
and Horace died of illness in Glaskow, KY the same summer. Below you will
find some information about the Buell boys.
- John Buell
- Born 1822; Died July 3, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg.
- Married Mary Webster (Born July 16, 1823; Died July 1, 1850) on July
10, 1847. They had one son, Theodore Buell (Born December 11, 1848; Died
September 26, 1915). After Mary died, John married Clarissa Day.
- First child of Richard Buell II and his first wife, Eliza North.
- "Thetford, enlisted in Company
K 4 , 5th
Michigan Infantry 4 on August 29, 1862
at Pontiac for 3 years service at the age of 37. He took the muster oath
on September 2, 1862. He was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg on July
3, 1863. He was also a member of the famed Michigan
Brigade 4 that repulsed the Confederate
General Stewart's attack on the 3rd that probably saved the battle for
the Union." (James was also there.)3
- "He was shot from his horse during a cavalry charge at the Battle
of Gettysburg, July 3,1863.(Wm. Pailthorp of Mt Morris and Israel Hill

- Horace Buell
- Born 1830; Died (August?) 1863.
- Married Mary Rose ? (who later married Slocum Bean). They had one daughter,
Anna Maria Buell (Born December 26, 1860; Died August 1, 1863), who died
'shortly' before her father of illness.
- Fourth child of Richard Buell II and his first wife, Eliza North.
- "Thetford, Michigan enlisted in Company
K 4 , 23rd
Michigan Infantry 4 on Aug 11, 1862 at
Flint, Michigan for 3 years service at the age of 32. He took the Muster
oath on Feb 11, 1862. The following spring he became ill and died of disease
at Glaskow, Ky. He was buried in Tompkinsville, Ky"2
- James Buell *
- Born March 20, 1836; Died April 3, 1900.
- Married Levina C. Tyler (Bron 1851; Died October 24, 1907) on October
24, 1866. They had 6 children (3 boys, 3 girls), all of whom lived to adulthood.
James is my Great-Great Grandfather. His son, Oliver Clinton Buell is my
Great Grandfather.

- "Genesee County, enlisted in Company
M 4, 3rd
Michigan Infantry 4 on September 12, 1861
at East Saginaw for 3 years service at the age of 25. He served with the
regiment which was a part of the Michigan
Brigade 4 under the command of Geo
Custer for the full term and re-enlisted as a Sergeant on June 19, 1864
at La Grange, Tn. He mustered out at San Antonio, Tx February 12, 1865.
He died on April 3, 1900 and is buried in Mt. Morris, Mi."1

- Born 1845; Died 1926
- Married Emma ?; Born 1848; Died 1922
- First child of Richard Buell II and his second wife, Marie Harroun.
- "enlisted in Company
M 4, 3rd
Michigan Infantry 4 on February 27, 1865
at Flint for 1 year service at the age of 19. He joined the regiment already
in the field at the mouth of the White River, Ark on March 19, 1865. He
was discharged at San Antonio, Tx on February 12, 186?. His last known
address was Clio, MI."1
- David Buell
- Born 1848; Died 1875
- Second child of Richard Buell II and his second wife, Marie Harroun.
- "enlisted in Company
M 4, 3rd
Michigan Infantry 4 on February 27, 1865
at Flint for 1 year service at the age of 18. He joined the regiment already
in the field at the mouth of the White River, Ark on March 19, 1865. He
was discharged at St. Louis, Mo on August 28, 1865. He died on April 28,
1878."1
