Synopsis: "
Getting Out
is about a young woman (Arlene Holsclaw) who is
released after an eight year
prison sentence, that followed
a lifetime in and out of juvenile
detention centers. It's about a
young woman's search for her
identity amidst the same violent
world of her past- a search
without that part of her that had
always enabled her to survive.
This play is about choices and limitations. It's about inner strength and temptation. And finally, it's about redemption and reconciliation. -Kelly Lovall
Throughout the play Arlene's past-memory-self "Arlie" is present reliving old experiences. Through these brief flashback we (the audience) learn of her history. |
Scenic concept: The set represents two environments, interpenetrated. Outside, is the grey cold world of institutional life. This environment serves as a memory space where Arlie lives out most of her past experiences. Inside is a small dilapidated apartment in the real world. Arlene is released from one prison to another. Imaginary prison guards are always present patrolling the catwalks and grounds. Memories happen simultaneously as scenes in the apartment, flowing back and fourth in a stream of consciousness. Only Arlie, (a subconscious memory of Arlene's former self) walks freely through all territories.
