Sympathy for the Devil
~The Exoneration of Tomo~
I'll be the first person to admit that I generally like the villians instead of the heros, however Fushigi Yuugi is not the case.  I love the Suzaku Seishi, most at least (I still think Tamahome's a dork).  I didn't really care for the Seiryuu, excluding Tomo.  I don't know why I liked him so much, but he was just damn cool!  He was the kind of evil that makes the Sailor Moon villians so cool.

So now to an explanation for this.  This is to exonerate or show that he wasn't sooo bad, he was bad, but in a good way.  But his crimes, he had a lot, but the bad ones I could blame on lots of circumstances, or simply Nakago (we could blame all the problems on him).  So, lets start.

First of all, it was his idea to rape Miaka.  The only problem I find with this is that the idea of it is gross.  I don't by any means condone rape of any sort, but Miaka?  Yuck!  He convinced Nakago to try, which he failed.  So Tomo took it upon himself to do it, and thanks to flute boy, he failed as well.

Secondly, that crazy makeup.  He could very well be the first cackling mime!  But we all have our quirks, and you can't say you'll forget that grease paint any time soon. But honestly, the opera make-up does have it's point.

Thirdly, he's a pervert.  Well isn't he just Mr. Originality?!  All the Seiryuu were perverts except for Amiboshi and Miboshi (for my stomach's sake I hope at least).  He was into boys, but that's not a crime or anything, even Nuri-chan goes that way most of the time.  The feather thing with Tamahome was I think more of a power thing, but I would be more disgusted that he was doing it to Tamahome more that anything else.  He had it in for Nakago, and Nakago used him for it.

Then there was Shin, his clam shell (that seemed to regenerate) and best friend (no doubt).  He named a clam shell.  This is very sad.  But when everyone except for Yui is not all that happy to see you, you start to turn to inanimate objects (though technically they were animated, you know what I mean).
He had a lot of good points.  And to illustrate that, my, in no paticular order, Top 10 Reasons Why Tomo's Cool:

1. He stands to be one of the most recognizable characters on Fushigi Yuugi
2. He's so good with illusions he even fooled Chiriko (first) and unbelievablely, Chichiri!!
3. He can generate any illusion he wants from a clam shell.  That's very original.
4. He can keep perfectly clear skin even while wearing all that makeup.
5. He didn't get stuck with a dumb image song. (see: Blue Eyes, Blue)
6. He cackles!  But not in an annoying Dub Zoisite way. (I hated that, >shivers<)
7. He can make your death the best experience in you life. (ooh, irony!)
8. He makes evil look cool.
9. He can make just about anything into a weapon. (Like feathers, which are generally the opposite!)
10. Look at him! He's a total hottie! And that's reason enough. ^_^
But in the end, Tomo was just another pawn to Nakago (like everyone else).  And thanks to flute boy's brother, psycho yo-yo boy, Tomo is a ghost.  But Tomo was good while he lasted and will forever be in the memory of his fans.  So lets hear 3 cheers for the man brave enough to wear grease paint and feathers!  3 cheers for the man who illusions were the best anime has ever seen.  3 cheers for the fact he doesn't always wear make-up and we can see that beautiful face!  Kakakakakaka!!!!
"Sympathy for the Devil" is owned by the Rolling Stones.  Haven't heard the song?  It's at the ending when the credits start for "Interview with the Vampire".
