| Crimson Sea was created by the folks at Koei. Koei is perhaps most recognized for their Dynasty Warriors series of games. In a few ways, Crimson Sea plays as a Dynasty Warriors game. You have a party of characters centered around a hero and you must perform many missions in order to advance your hero and eventually win. However the similarities end there. Crimson Sea is set in a distant future of a different star system. You play as Sho, a young freelancer-type who remembers little of his past. You along with your sidekick Yangquin are recruited by this hot chick Live-D (hehehe D) to work for IAG (the galactic fuzz) to help stop a menace known as the Muton Void. The Void is essentially a sort of plague/infestation destroying all human life in the system of Theophilus. You of course know what infestation meanslots of bugs. Woo Hoo! The main reason for your recruitment is because youre a Vipa, some sort of genetic super-soldier with neo-psionic (superhuman/magic) abilities. Along the way you will hook up with your love interest Shami and meet the enigmatic Ekdahl (bad guy/brother-type). You will definitely enjoy your first encounter with him. Okay, enough background. This game is a fantasy shooter. You go through a lot of missions blasting your way through literal swarms of enemies and fight some nasty looking bosses. I really enjoy the blasting but they also throw in a variety of missions such as collecting items, search-and-destroy, and escort to keep things from getting monotonous. You will sometimes work alone or with your crew. Of course you will be doing most of the work. Your performance in a mission (time, kills, combo, everyone lives) determines your monetary reward to use for weapons, upgrades, and neo-psionic upgrades. Of course my favorite part of this game is facing a swarm and going for a super combo. A combo is simply a number of consecutive hits/kills with no real pause. My best right now is 262 (thats 262 kills with no real pause), but I know I can do better. The boss battles are also a lot of fun. The best so far was facing Gammorah (their version) in Chapter 3it was a riot. Let me just say the graphics in this game are amazing. The cut scenes, in-game, and character designs are some of the best out there now. Only Square and Capcom (Resident Evil) have better looking cut scenes and characters in my opinion. The sound is 5.1 but the music and effects are so-so. The gameplay as mentioned above is fast-paced and frenetic. Drink lots of soda before playing and youll be ok. Its also a fairly lengthy game so you will definitely get your moneys worth. So put on your swim trunks, zinc oxide your nose, grab a large energy weapon, and lets go for a dip in the sea. |
