Review: Im a 22yr old male from England who has just recently watched Donnie Darko.The movie was one i had been wanting to watch for a very long time after seeing a review of it late "02".I was set up to be disapointed but gladly wasn't.The film kept my attention from start to finish,Drew Barrymore helped:)I have been fascinated with the concept of time travel since the age of 5 when i first saw Back to the future(which gets a slight mention in Darko)this film,after seeing it just 1 and a half times is now in my top 5 of all time.I cant really describe why,but it really hit a nerve.Donnie is a character relatable to all outcasts and the dark humour of the film is great.Watch this movie if you like to think,watch it again if you like to think harder.

I can't help raving about it. No other film of 2002 or 2003 so far has given me so much to think about......after it had finished i just thought wow. No other ending has left me speechless. Review: Brilliant! I appreciate the fact that there's been a movie made in the last five years that is both engrossing and worth talking and thinking about after the movie is over. Disturbing and totally fascinating, Jake Gyllenhaal was awesome in this movie as Donnie the schizo - or was he??? The symbolism was laid on heavy and there was plenty discussion fodder for Monday morning. Recommended that you don't watch at midnight while alone in the house - Frank tends to pop up and scare the bejesus out of you, especially in that mirror scene and especially if you are in a room with entirely too many reflective surfaces. All around, a great psychological thriller - a groundbreaking flick that planted some definite theoretical seeds about the fourth dimension and fate.

Review: There were about six good songs to hit the radio in the mid-to-late eighties and this movie's soundtrack has them all!
On top of that, the script is uncommonly good at giving a believable voice to teenagers. Too often in films - and especially in TV - dialog between teenagers sounds preposterous. In this film it all rings true and this was helped by uniformly good acting and direction.

The parallels to support varying theories are seemingly there, however, upon a second screening, this is directorial and editorial sleight of hand---considering the subject matter, it is undeniable master craftsmanship. Review: Look Im not going to rant and rave about how good the film is because as I can see almost all on this site have liked the film. However I did read a review I wished to respond to and allow anyone to read. One of the older reviews mention that the film was underdeveloped and was good but not great. The author then went on to say that most of the people who are givning the film good reviews are under the age of 20, and see this type of cinematic thing on MTV and such all the time, so we glance over the lack of character developement and loose ends. I am 19 and I'm a film major. To be specific I write scripts, not good ones mind you, I know my limits, however I understand the lack of time an author has. As a screenwriter you are expected to not only tell a story in 2 hours but also create believable characters and relationships. This is hard enough to do in a "normal" film let alone a movie that tackles such complex topics as, God, timetravel, love, and death, to only n!ame a few, and to do this in a way that is not the stereotypical pop technique now a days. And for those who have given the film a bad review because of lack of understanding, that is not the films fault, that is yours, deal with it, don't bash a superb work of art. In short the film deserves credit as one of the best and most thought provoking movies of all time.

Review: I only rated this a 5 because there are no numbers higher than that. Four days ago, I've never heard of this movie, and Jake Gyllenhaal's only other performance that I have seen was Bubble Boy. Suddenly, 2 of my friends saw it, in two different places, but within the span of about 3 days (coincidence?). My friends suggested it to me, and I was reluctant at first, but it wasn't until last night, when my friend who suggested it rented it so he could see it again, and I saw it with him. I was speechless when the movie was over. The only words I managed to say were "That was weird." But in reality, I was blown away. Never before have I seen a movie that made me think so much. And I thought The Matrix was a mindf*ck! I recommend this movie to anyone on the planet who has not seen it.

Review: I saw this on HBO a while back, but I caught only the last half so it was really confusing. I started looking up reviews for the movie and found mostly great ones, so I just decided to go out and buy the DVD. I've seen it 3 times since then and it's definately a great great movie. The best part has to be the excellent way Kelly put us back into the 80's. There's so ideas and themes going on in this movie, it's great! I can honestly say it's one of my favorites. Review: For days after I saw this move I was contemplating the meaning, if there happens to be one in the first place. I am still scanning the more prominent images in my head, because I have a lot of ideas about this movie, but not one solid one. That is precisely what makes this film a treasure in a sea of meaningless crap that they call film. I am still haunted by frank, a bunny rabbit with an edge. When I see myself in the mirror I glance quickly away and back again, because I want to figure it all out, and yet it frightens me. And the resolution of this movie is absolutely brilliant, and although it doesn't by any means give an image that isn't blurry, it puts a few pieces of the puzzle back in place. A masterpiece!

Review: Well first off I thought that this was one of the best films I have ever seen! (One of my new favorites) Watch out "Matrix: Reloaded", "Terminator 3", and even "The Hulk"! -This movie had a marvelous plot with the most superb sensations of science. The transcendent, lose cannon (Donnie Darko) played by Jake Gyllenhaal [Bubble Boy] suffers from some sort of dilusional disorder. Donnie meets an illusionary friend named Frank which indeed gave me the creeps. Frank is a six foot bunny causing him to do ruthless acts of chaos 'for the better'. Changing time in place to something better- But by the end of the movie he realizes that what he was doing may have not been for the better and in his quest for truth/justice he loses the life of the only person he had loved. Anyways, thought it was great... reminded me a lot like "Romeo And Juliet" Oh, this movie also had a great soundtrack. One of my favorite songs for Donnie Darko had to be Manipulated Livi!ng. GO RENT DONNIE DARKO!

Review: When in theatres I heard no mention of this film. A friend of mine suggested this film to me and said to watch it both loud and with someone else. Whoa was that great advice. After peeling my brain from the television screen I was involved in a full-fledged conversation over what it meant, and how you could appropriately describe it. We came up with the conclusion that neither could be done. It worked on pure visceral splendour and abstract emotion. The clashing of satirical suburbian upheavals and metaphysical discord. In other words it's an independant triumph of skill and beauty. Scenes work in harmony, and actors in syncopation. It's a pure work of art, and I couldn't get it out of my head.

Review: I went into this film knowing nothing about it except that it starred Jake Gyllenhaal, who I'd seen in a play last year. The film tells the story of young Donald Darko who is experiencing some erm...emotional problems and, after an accident at the beginning of the film, starts to be contacted by a 6ft evil-faced bunny rabbit.
This is just the beginning of the twists and turns that the film will eventually take as Donnie tries to be ' a good kid' but is disturbed by some of the strange figures that he finds himself surrounded by. Then, he discovers time travel...
The film delivers on every level and manages to be both throught-provoking and indeedn hauntingas we feel ourselves getting lost in the story just as Donnie is. Could it just be that our fate is laid out before us and that we're powerless to avoid it? Donnie tries to answer this in his own unique way. Richard Kelly's definitely gonna be one to watch.

Review: GREAT MOVIE! I have not seen many movies that actually make you "think." This one...I watched 5 times! I also checked out the DVD to see the additional 18 - 20 scenes that were cut out of the film. If you get the DVD, and see those scenes....you will see alot of things that help make some things more clear from the film. Unfortunately, the movie company limited the film to just 2 hours. Too bad! I think some things would help the film, in terms of enhances the depth of the characters....the relationships they had that you do not get to see. This movie is trippy, but an interesting trippy. And oh! Some of the shots done are beautiful!! The music...and lyrics...the imagery of how they shot things..the concepts..and symbolism....will make you "feel" something... and think....and that shows this is a great director! It's not for slow, idiotic people who like cheap laughs and genre movies. If you don't have an IQ of at least 109, don't watch it because you will never understand any of it. Review: Rarely has a film touched me in such a way as "Donnie Darko". When I left the theater my friends and I were truly speachless. That's saying a lot considering that we always manage to critique films.
It is so peppered with psycosocial/sociopolitical references ranging from the obscure to obvious that it would take much analyis to identify them all i.e:trampoline Reagan mask=Gonzo journalism, Attitudinal Beliefs=pseudopsychology,The Evil Dead representing the trivial nature of fright whereas the schools social program overemphasizes the aspects of "Fear" ect.
Elements of German Expressionism are prominent, as well as a strong undertones of Black Comedy but this film breaks traditional categorization. "Donnie Darko" is truly an Avant-Garde work in a sea of films that are afraid to take risks and go in unconventional directions.
I applaud all of the people who gave themselves to this project. Richard Kelly has shown great imangination and directorial skill and cinematic bravery. Drew Barrymore for having faith in the Script.The Gyllenhaals of course did an amazing job with the material.
And finally much recognition should be given to Katharine Ross for coming out of retirement to add her great skill to this project. I apologize for this rather long winded review, but I truly feel the need to spread the word of this great film. Plus everyone should know that fecies=baby mice!

Review: Someone messaged that most of the people who reviewed this movie must not have been over twenty. I laughed at that. That was funny. There were some weak parts in the movie, some 'loose ends' but I still think it's fair to give it a 5, even if I do watch MTV. Which I do. I like music, liking music has nothing to do with understanding this movie, or liking it. As for being under 20? I'm 12, who the hell cares? All I know is that I enjoyed this movie, and you know what? Those people who think that seem to think that you need to be a adult to like this movie, or you need to know alot about time travel or any of that crap, I'd have to quote Donnie. Review: The best movie all year. I'm proud to say that I have a new #5 on my top movies of all times list following closely behind Requiem For a Dream, Fight Club, American Beauty and Memento. Review: I loved it! Seeing a good movie these days is hard to come by, due to washed out blockbuster money pits that provide you with big exposions but lacks a solid story. All the critics that accually get paid to see movies that say what is it really about though? Well what is your job really about? Review: A $10 million student film. I'm not saying that is particularly bad. The film shows me that Richard Kelly is willing to go out on a limb and try new ways of presenting an idea. Nowadays this is unfortunately all too rare. I found the story constantly turning in on itself, trying to come to some conclusion. But it never quite succeeded. I do, however, look forward to Kelly's next film(s). A great director in the making.

Review: The movie I felt was fair. The story had lots of potential but seemingly couldn't tie up the plot lines. I get the feeling from reading the reviews posted so far that the viewers mostly have not passed the age of 20. The movie was put together in the manner that the viewers in this age group are used to. MTVish...disjunct and superficial. There was plenty of potential in the story but never fleshed out. Characters never developed, no meaning to the book or the old lady. Teenage angsts and hellucinations, or time travel. So many questions. The concept was great, but the movie fell way short...way short, in my opinion.

Review: I liked this movie very much. I had to drive an hour to see it (limited release) but it was well worth the trip. This is a wonderfully strange tale of a teen finding himself in an odd twist of fate in which he can choose to take a different path in order to set things right in the world. At least that�s how I interpreted it. The great thing about this film is that it allows the viewers to take it upon themselves to understand it. I hope to see more things from writer/director Kelly and I will also be sure to see anything Jake Gyllenhaal chooses to be in. He was absolutely amazing as the cuddly and confused (hero?)Donnie Darko.

Review: I saw a preview screening of the film yesterday in Manhattan. I did not know what the movie was about until I got the tickets on Wednesday and quickly surfed the official website. Even after that I did not fully understand what the movie was about. That all changed yesterday when I actually saw the film. "Donnie Darko" is a very cool movie. It was creepy, weird and also unexpectedly intentionally funny. Jake Gyllenhaal turns in the performance of a seasoned actor. It's shocking to see him turning in such a performance because he was in the summer flop "Bubble Boy." His performance is wonderful and I have nothing but praise for this young actor. The movie is about Donnie Darko, a young man with a troubled past. He wants to be a good kid, but he is clearly troubled. He sleep walks, sees a therapist for his problems, and also has an imaginary friend named Frank a six foot tall bunny. One night while sleep walking a plane engine crashes through his roof, luckily he is not in his room. I will not divulge much of the plot from here because I already said too much, and to say anymore would ruin the experience for everyone else. Drew Barrymore is not a major character in the film. She pretty much has an extended cameo as Donnie's teacher. Her scenes though are good. She lends the credible star name to the film much like she did in the movie "Scream." The rest of the supporting cast is good. His parents are pretty funny. Donnie's gym teacher is a total wackadoo, the talent show routine to the song "Notorious" was hilarious. His bickering with his sister is also quite funny. The film is filled with 80's references to the Dukakis -vs- Bush election, to "Star Search," to "Smurfs," to a hilarious reference to "Married With Children." The movie also stars Mr. Dirty Dancing himself as a cheeseball self help guru, much like the Tappy Tibbons character in "Requiem For A Dream." What's right about the movie: The characters performances mainly Jake Gyllenhaal The inventive storyline The tight direction and innovative camera shots What's bad: The ending may be a bit of a disappointment for viewers used to Hollywood sugar coated endings. It's not a romantic comedy staring Julia Roberts doing the same thing she does in every movie. Lets face it mainstream audiences love to spend their money on a movie that's either a sequel to an established hit, or another variation on a movie they have seen countless times already, or on a movie with a major star and no plot. I challenge you guys to actually go see this movie, it will make you laugh, and think. It's a pity that everyone will flock this weekend to see "13 Ghosts" or "Bones." When will we ever learn?

Review: This movie was spectacular. It defies description. You have to see it to understand - and you may not even understand it then. But I guarantee it will not be what you expect - no matter what you expect. See it repeatedly - you see something new every time. I saw it twice back to back and I'm still reeling. I wish it was more widely released so more people could see it. The characters are wonderful - they're complex and counterintuitive. there are beautiful moments amidst the strangeness of it all. And, it's FUNNY!
