| Roxie is the main character in CHICAGO, she cheats on her husband, Amos, and then murders her boyfriend, Fred Casely, because: 1) he was walking out on her, and 2) he lied to her about getting her into Vaudeville show. She gets caught and spends most of the film in jail where she meets Velma Kelly (her idol, since she has always wanted to be a dancer on stage) and Velma is incredibly mean to her so Roxie decides to get even by stealing all of Velma's publicity. She and her lawyer, Billy Flynn, make up this fake story about Roxie's life to win sympathy from the jury and it works. Roxie gets off, free of charge but right after her trial, another woman shoots her lawyer and steals the press away from Roxie. As Roxie desperately searches for a job, she runs into Velma Kelly once more and they get an idea to do an act together and are a huge success. "Ladies and gentlemen, I'd just like to say how flattered I am that you all came to see me. You see, I was a moth... crushed on a wheel. You know, butterfly drawn to the... to the...I bet you want to know why I shot the bastard..." |
