Matron "Mama" Morton is the head of the Cook County Jail and tries to help all of the girls in the jail and acts like a very motherly character to them.  She makes phone calls for them for 100 dollars in a chance to get them off.  She is most partial to Velma Kelly and it is as if they are best friends, Mama does lots of favors for Velma and essentially gave her all of her publicity.  After Roxie overhears Velma and Mama making plans, Mama makes a call to Billy Flynn for Roxie and basically makes all of Roxie's publicity happen and when Roxie starts letting all the fame get to her head and forgets what Mama did for her, Mama and Velma sing the song "Class," in lament.  Mama finds Roxie's diary and in sort of revenge, she gives it to Velma to testify in court with.

"Oh, no,  you call me Mama,  We're here to take care of you.  Now, you'll be habitatin' down in the east block..."
