Emma Caulfield on DARKNESS FALLS and BUFFY's future

FANGORIA caught up with BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYERs Emma Caulfield, who was in New York to chat up her big-screen debut, DARKNESS FALLS (formerly THE TOOTH FAIRY and FEAR THE DARK), which opens January 31 from Columbia Pictures and Revolution Studios.

If DARKNESS FALLS is a hit, which everyone feels it will be, they are already talking about doing a trilogy, Caulfield tells Fango. But you have to see the movie to find out if my character survives. Though the actress wrapped production on the film last Christmas in Australia, reshoots will be commencing in Canada this fall, with FX master Stan Winston redesigning the lead creature to up the horror ante. Were just waiting for Stan to finish TERMINATOR 3, Caulfield adds.

The actress is currently toiling as BUFFYs vengeance demon Anya, and while creator Joss Whedon has said in the past that he would give up the show if lead actress Sarah Michelle Gellar ever left (her contract expires this season, and shes not expected to renew), Caulfield reveals that other options of a Buffy-less BUFFY have been proposed. She points to the return of Slayer Faith (Eliza Dushku)who returns for the seasons last five episodesas an obvious possibility. And then theres Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg). This weeks season premiere appeared to be grooming Buffys younger sis for Slayerhood (God forbid!).

Josh realizes that BUFFY is bigger than one person, Caulfield says. There is a very talented group of performers here that can continue carrying the show if anyone leaves. One person who wont be back for an eighth round of BUFFY is Caulfield herself. My contract is up at the end of the season, and its time for me to go, she says. Im not coming back. I want to do other things with my career. Howd you like to do the same thing every day for five years?
