of note in Brighton Below Whitehawk Whitehawk is a Bravo, and regarded as being one of the foremost combatants in Brighton Below. He held the position of Champion for many years until he retired from fighting in the Circus arena. There are those who say that he has the head of a white feathered eagle. Its blatantly not true but he enjoys the additional attention it gets him. His name is often used by parents of wayward children in Brighton Below. Many a youngster has been threatened with a visit from Whitehawk if they dont behave themselves He is apparently good friends with Booth, and they have been known to sit atop the roof of St Peters watching the sun set Blatchington Blatchington used to be a poet and lover in the World Above, until his excessive consumption of opium and drinking lead him to Brighton Below. Hes under the impression that hes died and that this is his Hell or purgatory. How else can he explain why no-one can see him. His old friends and family ignore him when he tries to speak to them. Its obviously because hes dead. Everyone else around him who can see him must be a ghost, or demons sent to taunt him. He tends to be a little concerned that hes trapped in this purgatory, but once you manage to get him off the subject hes actually a well versed and articulate young man. Booth Brighton Belows most famous Bird speaker. Like Old Steine, he is quite often seen at the Market, but he tends to spend the majority of the time on the rooftops of the city tending to lost or injured birds. He is favoured by the Sky Carvers, and considers Lord Peregrine as a personal friend as well as the leader of the avian factions. Lord Peregrines normally aggressive manner doesnt seem to work with Booth. Hes also very good friends with Whitehawk Stanmer A renowned raconteur, dilettante and speaker in the service of the Kemp Household Stammer is often seen in the company of Lord Kemp, drinking and telling tales of when Brighton Below was more popular than Brighton Above. Lord Kemp keeps Stanmer close by, as been known to talk Lord Kemp out of trouble on more than one occasion, or at least calm those that wish to kill in to allow their escape The Dials The Dial family were one of the most respected families in the time of King Alfred. They were famed also for their seven children. There are stories that they each were blessed with their own gifts, the youngest being renowned as the creator of the Dial Prophecies They each went their own way many years ago after their parents were killed by an unknown assailant. It is said that should they ever re-unite that they had the capability to unite or destroy Brighton Below. The Druid Stories tell of a Druid many years ago before the reign of King Alfred who was torn apart by horses as punishment for his prophecies bringing only misery He body was scattered to the corners of the village. The story states that he survived the execution, or rather his head did, which continued to spout prophecies for a number of decades to come before it went missing. There are new Druidic prophecies appearing all the time though, so it is believed that someone took it and continues to ensure that the Druids words are still heard The Engineer The Engineer has been a part of Brighton Below for longer than he or anyone else can remember. A wizened and rather doddery old fellow, but his knowledge of the wizardy of clockwork, mechanics and electrics is legendary. Give him a week and he could make the Titanic work again. The Engineer is merely referred to by his title of The Engineer, not even he can remember his given name Old Steine Old Steine is the leader of the Ratspeakers in Brighton Below. He rarely ventures from the sewer areas, preferring the company of Master Threetoes and the other Browncoat rats to that of humans, though is sometimes present at the Floating Market. Mazda Mazda is a stocky, tattooed man who runs the Circus on behalf of Lord Preston. Hes there to oversee any fighting to ensure that its all above board, those who attempt to influence a fight sometimes find themselves in the ring too. He also runs the betting at the Circus, and is often seen urging the punters into action. Mazda knows a lot of good fighters, and can spot talent when he sees it. Cavendish Cavendish is the leader of the citys Statue speakers. He is apparently considered to be Queen Victorias most loyal servant and can often be seen by the Dome, conversing with Max Miller who he states is a most fascinating character. Both members of the Stone Court and Bronze Court treat Cavendish with a great deal of respect knowing that he has performed a number of important services for both factions Hannington Hannigton is the most successful of the traders at The Floating Market. He quite often takes the finest items from many of the other smaller traders, or offers them a bulk price. Then he transfers the items to his stall and sells for a higher price. His suppliers are happy as they sell most of their stock and don't have to carry it home. He is happy because he makes a very tidy profit. This has made him unpopular with some other traders, primarily due to jealousy Coldean Coldean is the leader of the Ladies. She keeps her private affairs very close to her chest but all know better than to ask. Even Lady Palmeira doesn't pry into Coldean's past. She is known to be a fearsome warrior, and some claim that she is the re-incarnation of Boudica herself Hanover Hanover is the leader of the undead faction called The Flatlines. His is something of a tragic story. Apparently in the early 1900's Hanover was married to a beautiful young woman named Elizabeth who was pregnant with his child. Upon hearing that his wife was about to give birth he rushed home but ran in front of the path of a horse and was trampled. He was killed almost instantly, but it seems that his determination got the better of death and his continued home. Upon reaching the house all could see that Hanover was dead (parts of his head were missing), and he fled. He never got to see his child Davigdor Davigdor is Lord Roes lieutenant, and is rumoured to be the most powerful of the Mystics in Brighton Below. He too was apparently involved in the plot to kill Lord Preston and his family those many years ago Davigdor is something of a mystery, though his reputation does proceed him. Those who have crossed him in the past have often ended up dying under mysterious (and quite often horrific) circumstances |
