FUDGE
stands for Freeform Universal Do-it-Yourself Gaming Engine and
was created by Steffan O'Sullivan. The game is just what the title
says, an engine. The Darklands game was created by Jason
Tilley (c)2001, however, the game mechanics are based on FUDGE.
Basically, FUDGE allows players to
create characters by choosing just about any skills and attributes they
want. In the case of Darklands, the GM took that liberty, but the
freeform aspect of the game possibilities are still evident. FUDGE
can be used in any gaming setting imaginable - Fantasy, Comedy,
Post-Nuke, WWII Spies, Dark Horror, Cartoon Mouse RPG's (???), 18th
Century British Exploration, Science Fiction Melodrama... the list goes
on indefinitely. For more information on
FUDGE, articles, links, or to purchase (or download) a copy, you should check
out the game creator's website.
A word of warning...
FUDGE will seem extremely complex to those with no previous role-playing
experience. However, it will seem very liberating to those who
have run the gamut of RPG's. Check out the FUDGE site - if you
don't mind having your paradigm of role-playing completely turned
upside-down. (and if you don't mind getting sidetracked by dozens of
interesting links. Lots of good stuff on the net about this
game...)
Do I need to read anything on the FUDGE
site to play Darklands?
Nope!
