He was the son of Theseus of Antiope. He was pursued by Phaedra, his stepmother, although he denied return her feelings. Hence, she commited suicide and left a letter saying he had raped her. This treachery would in turn lead to his intimely end. It seems that the entire thing was planned by the Goddess Aphrodite who became angry when Hippolytus chose to follow Artemis
St. Hippolytus was born in 2nd Century Rome although no one knows his exact date of birth. His writings have been compared with that of Origen, one of the most distinguished early fathers of the Church. He is known as the 1st Antipope. He died as a martyr for the Church in 235 A.D. earning him his saint status. It is said he died in the same way as th mythological Hippolytus, whose name means loose horse, which encompassed being dragged to death by horses ironically.

Post Modern Peter Pan?
The story of Hippolytus tells a moral of a young ma who refuses to give up his carfree lifestyle in lieu of a married lifestyle. This causes him to be punished by the gods. This ties in with the theme of the British Peter Pan by J.M.Barrie. Barrie tells a story a boy who never wishes to grow up at all.
Rubens painted "The Death of Hippolytus" in 1611 and it was displayed in the Fitzwilliam museum in 1979. Hippolytus flees from his fatherTheseus along the Corinthian Sea only to have to chariot flipped over when his horses were scared by a sea monster. He was then dragged to his death by his very own horses.
