Bribery and Ego

I have always had a strong aversion to rats, but I must say I am enjoying the sight of so many rats finally jumping the ship captained by the King Rat himself, Bill Clinton. The number of Clinton supporters is diminishing sharply, and rightly so. The actions and behavior of the Clintons are a national tragedy and national embarrassment beyond measure. We know why Clinton wanted to stay in the White House; now, after eight years, his power is gone; without that power, his "friends" have no reason to support him. Who could support this man anyway? He is a liar, a scoundrel, an inherently crooked and immoral man, and now, unquestionably, a traitor to this nation. Truly, Benedict Arnold must take a distant second place showing in our history books to the likes of the man from Hope. Clearly, the man has lied about and covered up more scandals--economic, political, sexual, and drug-related--than ten men can remember. Now, though, Clinton has stepped way over the line of ethical and acceptable behavior. Listen to the men who have been his strongest supporters. Joe Biden, no saint himself, can only explain the pardon of Marc Rich by saying Clinton had to have been braindead or hopelessly naive to have done such a thing. Even Jimmy Carter has called Clinton's actions disgraceful--I can't remember Jimmy Carter ever having a negative thing to say about anyone before. For weeks, I have been asking myself where James Carville has been--now, even James Carville has come out and criticized Clinton's judgment, strongly hinting that even he believes that money played a part in this latest Clinton scandal. What I find especially tragic about this whole affair is the fact that this miscarriage of justice should never have happened because Bill Clinton should have been convicted by the Senate during the impeachment hearings. Thus, my own Republican party deserves some blame for this whole mess.

Why did he do it? Why did Clinton pardon such despicable men? That is what I want to address here. First and foremost, without question, the Rich pardon was bought and paid for. That much is clear already, and God only knows how much money passed under the table that we do not even know about. I really don't think the Clinton Library and the DNC were the only recipients of Denise Rich's charitable donations. Bribery is a felony that should certainly be punished--severely--by law. You can't honestly say Clinton didn't understand the implications of a Rich pardon because even Bill Clinton, as dumb as he is, knew that the reaction to this unpardonable pardon would be outrage on a large, fairly bipartisan scale. He knew he would take heat for what he was doing, especially since he was bypassing the Justice Department in order to accomplish it. Many people would say that the only explanation for this act is that Clinton got something for it. This man stole historic furniture from the White House and tried to claim it was furniture he brought with him--he will certainly take a bribe and has done so in the past. I don't see why his palms aren't bright red from all of the Red Chinese money he has raked in over the years. I say that bribery is only part of the explanation, though.

What other reason, besides bribery, can explain Clinton doing something so stupid and blatantly un-American, unethical and illegal, something that would seriously detract from the "legacy" he cared so much about?. The second factor, I would argue, is Clinton's incredibly huge ego. Clinton would rather die, I think, that be out of the news. He wants everyone in America and around the world talking about him nonstop 24 hours a day. He could not stand playing second fiddle to George W. Bush on Inauguration Day, so he kept giving speeches all day and stealing news time from Bush on Bush's day. What better way to keep yourself in the news than to pardon a despicable smuggler and traitor? In case the Rich travesty doesn't generate enough news, just throw in dozens of pardons for drug dealers, perhaps the most despicable people on the planet. The pardons will keep Clinton's name at the top of the news for months. Clinton still gets to be the "star." His name stays on everyone's lips. President Bush cannot possibly get the air time Clinton is getting right now. Clinton loves that. I think, quite seriously, that Bill Clinton is insane; he thinks he can get away with anything and everything because he has always been allowed to get away with it, so he does not worry about paying for his crimes or sins. He will always jump at the chance to keep himself in the news, by whatever means necessary--the money he has taken from Denise Rich is only a fringe benefit from this whole fiasco.

This time, things may be different, though. You are a private citizen now, Slick Willie. The power you once had is gone. Your friends are deserting you because they are finally realizing what a slimy excuse of an American you are. Even your allies are deriding you now. Your prospects for making truckloads of money from speaking engagements are dwindling fast; one company, Morgan Stanley, has even had to issue an apology to its customers for paying you to speak before them already. A prosecutor in New York, your new "home state," a prosecutor you appointed yourself, is seriously considering a criminal inquiry into your actions. Now the Congressional committees of inquiry also know about your brother-in-law's huge payoff for services rendered to a drug-dealing kingpin named Carlos Vignali. Bill Clinton says that a 15-year sentence is too drastic and unfair of a sentence for someone merely distributing 800 pounds of cocaine. I don't think I am alone in saying that Carlos Vignali should be locked up in jail for the rest of his life, that his bones, when he dies, should be thrown in some dirty corner of a rat-infested cell and left there for a couple of centuries, and then somebody should shovel up his remains (if there are any left), and throw them in a shallow grave somewhere. Actually, I would have him put to death, but I know everyone won't agree with me about the usefulness of the death penalty. In any event, Carlos Vignali and others like him, some of whom Clinton granted sweeping pardons to, don't deserve the life that our God graciously gave to them because they are the people killing our kids (and our adults) with cocaine and every other illegal drug they can get their hands on. They kill people, reaping untold fortunes in the process, and too few of them are ever caught, let alone brought to justice. The conviction of Vignali was a great triumph for all of us in this country, especially for the youth, many of whom can so easily be led into a life of addiction, and Bill Clinton said six years was more than enough time for this man to pay his debt to society . Men like Vignali can never repay society for the things they have done, and to let a guy like this off scot-free tells our kids that drugs must not be all bad after all, and it demoralizes the brave men and women fighting every day to keep drugs off our streets.

There is one good thing coming out of this whole mess. Clinton may actually fulfill one promise he made to America--he may, when all is said and done, have actually united America again. Let me say some kind words to any Democratic readers out there. I no longer consider Bill Clinton a Democrat, which means my respect for that party has just increased immensely. I am glad to see so many Democrats finally realizing that Bill Clinton is a disgraceful man who has done great damage to our system of government and law and order. I'm not going to condemn Democrats for Clinton's actions anymore. Clinton may want to throw the blame for his scandals on any nearby passersby, but I hold Clinton solely responsible for the mess he has made. The Democrats, like myself, care about America's youth and about law and order--only Bill Clinton does not. He will do anything, and I mean anything, just to stay in the limelight--his belief that he can never be held accountable for such things will be his undoing in the end. Clearly, the man belongs either in jail or in a mental hospital, for he is only one of two things (maybe both)--criminally insane or criminally stupid. In the end, and this is very important, it is the Republican party I love so dearly that is responsible for this whole pardon mess. If a number of our GOP senators had not caved in during the impeachment trial and voted to acquit Clinton of the crimes he committed in the Lewinsky affair, Rich would still be a fugitive from justice, Vignali would still be in jail, along with dozens of his fellow drug-dealers. This is our fault, fellow Republicans. Some of you did not stand firm when it came time to live up to the high moral standards required of us all as Americans, some of you decided that it was not in your personal or political interest to remove Clinton from office for his crimes, and some of you, as a result, weakened and debased our government, our system of law, and our morality. You Republicans (and you are a minority percentage of the party, thank heavens) are as responsible, in a sense, for the pardon outrages as Bill Clinton himself is.
