Chapter Five

Ow Ow Ow

Leona was being poked on her waist by Damien. He seemed to think it was amusing that she kept saying Ow whenever he poked her wound.

Ow OwOW! STOP IT! Leona slapped Damiens hand away as hard as she could.

Damien. came Ferns warning tone.

Damien shrugged and walked away leaving Leona rubbing her side in pain. That boy is a pain in my backside! she growled.

More like your waistline, but thats beside the point. Fern smirked.

Leona settled onto the sofa in front of the fire. Jack came around and sat down next to her. He smiled pleasantly at her. How are you feeling, Leona? he asked her.

Horrible these stitches hurt and they itch as well Leona sighed as she grabbed her side and tried to scratch through her sweater.

Jack gave her a sympathetic look. Im sorry to hear about that he said.

There was silence until Leona decided to break it. Well what is it you wanted to talk to me about? She was tired from lack of sleep and the pain in her side, so she was a little bolder for it.

Jack smiled. Well As you know that I am the class prefect

She sat up and shook her head. No

Well I am and well, he paused to think, And I was wondering if you knew that the masked ball is coming up.

Leona just gave him a blank stare. The what?

Ooohh. Fern sighed. The masked ball Ive always wanted to go She turned to Leona and mussed up Leonas already wild, rich brown hair. They have it every year for the third years and up.

What do you do? Leona asked.

You dress up with a gown and a wicked mask and dance all night Fern sighed. She had a dreamy look in her eyes. Its on Halloween.

Wow that sounds like fun! Leona giggled. Then, she turned to Jack and smiled. So why did you bring it up?

Jack suddenly went white and shot off of the sofa. N-Nothing nothing at all! I just thought you might want to know, is all Then, he ran over to his friends.

Leona just stared after him. Okay Then, she turned to Fern. So what are you going to do.?

Fern thought a moment. I was thinking of asking someone to the ball, she said, I just dont know who, yet

Y-You would ask a b-boy to a ball? Leona stammered as she blushed furiously.

Well. Yes you wouldnt? Fern asked.

Leona went even redder, if that was possible. I er never asked anyone before.

Fern gave her a knowing smile. Dont worry Im sure someone will ask you. She said cheerfully.

Leona hugged Fern. You are great friend, you know that!

Fern hugged Leona back. As are you, Leona

Yuck! All this fluff is making me gag! Damiens tone broke through Leonas happy haze.

Leona growled and had to be held back by Fern. Damien..! she growled at him.

Oh please! As if you could hurt me! Damien said dismissively.

As if she could what? Another voice came in suddenly. Leona stopped trying to kill Damien and looked toward the main entrance to the main room. Max stood there with one eyebrow cocked. Is he bothering you, Leo? he said grumpily.

Yes! she smirked at Damien.

Damien stuck his tongue out at her and she did the same. Jerk! she growled.

I dont like him said Max.

Neither do I! Leona grumbled. Hes a major pain!

Leona suddenly realized that Fern wasnt talking. In fact, Ferns eyes seemed to have a glazed look to them. Fern? Whats wrong with her?

Max smiled at Fern. Hello, Fern how are you?

Mfine. Just fine. She mumbled.

Max sighed heavily and walked back to the door to the main room. Im going back I just wanted to check up on you, Leona Then, he disappeared through the door.

Max is weird sometimes. Leona said to Fern. Fern just stared dreamily into space. Fern? Fern. What is going on.

Fern finally smiled. Oh. She was blushing suddenly. I-Im fine I-Is your brother going with anyone to the ball? she asked hopefully.

No clue he just left while your head was up in space. Leona said as she indicated the door. Why do you ask?

Huh? O-Oh nothing Fern said. I was just wondering

That night, Leona sat awake in her bed. She kept thinking about the man who had sliced her with his knife. She kept wondering why she couldnt see his face. Maybe he has magical powers. She muttered to no one.

Suddenly, Munirahs eyes appeared in front of her. It was like looking at fire, but Leona managed to see them fine. Moonie what is it that you wanted to say to me.

The eyes suddenly became rather irritated. Please dont call me that

Call you what? Moonie?

THAT! Just think of what the other spirits would do to me if they heard that name! she growled.

Alright, Alright Munirah What do you want? Leona said as she gave an exasperated sigh.

Im sorry about the knife hurting you, Leona I just wanted you to know that it was not the intention that you would be harmed in anyway Munirah said softly.

Leona glanced up at the eyes. It was my fault I was careless

No Munirah then gave a sigh. Im just happy that you are okay. You really should not have gone after him, Leona Not after a wound like that.

Leona buried her head against her knees and she brought them up to her chest. I felt that I had to. She mumbled.

She suddenly felt a hand on her head, patting it like her mother did when she wasnt feeling her best. The sensation, however, was short lived. As son as Leonas head moved up, the sensation disappeared.

Just remember that the man who keeps coming is not magic himself He is a mirror.. And he isnt above killing you. Munirah said finally. Then, the eyes disappeared and Leona was left in the darkness of the girls dorm.

Morning came and Leona opened her eyes to see that the girls dorm was empty. She remembered what day it was that day. It was Saturday.

She grinned and jumped out of bed. As soon as she got dressed, she ran out of the tower to get downstairs to the cafeteria.

Fern sat at a table with Jack and Max. Jack looked up and smiled at her as Max gave Jack a death glare. Hullo! Leona smiled.

Good morning, Leo Fern smiled.

Leona sat down and spooned some eggs onto her plate. Good morning! she beamed cheerfully.

Jack was eating faster than Leona had ever seen anyone eat. Are you alright, Jack? she asked.

Jack smiled sheepishly at her and finished off his eggs. Im fine just fine!

Max was eyeing him oddly. Leona guessed that Jack was nervous because of Max. Max. stop staring at him like that Leona growled.

Why hes entirely too close to you Max snapped.

Maaaax. Leona said in a warning tone. Max sighed heavily and went back to eating as Jack smiled at her and got up from the table.

W-Would you like to er, Jack stammered as he twiddled him fingers, To walk with me b-by the lake?

Max was positively glaring at Jack, now. Leona smiled at him. Okay er how about after I eat?

Oh! All right! Ha ha ha. Dont mind me ha ha ha! Then, Jack disappeared out through the main entrance.

I dont like him, either growled Max.

Awickle Sagie has a date by the lake! Damiens familiar drawl invaded the table. Damien turned the chair across from Leona around and sat in it backwards. He rested his head on his arms which were crossed on the top of the chair.

Leona blushed, but continued to eat. I do not have a d-date she stammered out. He just wants to spend a nice day talking

Boyyou are clueless Damien said suddenly.

Max and Fern both slapped him on his head. Dont call her that!

Damien growled. Fine! I hope you have a GREAT time, Sage! Itll be the least of your worries! Then, Damien stood up and stomped over to his friends.

That boy is not right Max grumbled.

After breakfast, Leona wandered out the main entrance to the small lake that was next to Errol Academy. It was pretty outside that day, though she was certainly glad to be wearing her sweater. It was rather windy and cold.

She stood beside the lake, watching the small ripples of water as the wind created them. She watched the ducks feeding on the water and swimming across the distances.

Its pretty, isnt it.

Leona jumped. She whirled around to see Jack standing beside her. He gave her a smile. She calmed herself down and smiled weakly back at him. Y-yes, it is

He motioned with his head for them to start walking. It was rather silent as they walked along the edge of the lake. Then, he spoke again. You know if you need any help trying to find a dress and a mask for the ball, please tell me

Leona blushed. Well I actually need help I didnt know before hand so I didnt bring anything other than my normal clothes.

Jack smiled at her. Well He scratched his head in thought. There is a small catalogue the school keeps for this sort of thing. Or maybe I could ask Miss Brighton for help she used to design and make dresses when she was our age.

Leona gasped. Oh wow! Could she help me?!

Jack gave her a smile. I would hope so.

She took jacks hands in hers and shook them. Thank you! Thank you! Ill go right to her and ask!

Then, she ran off. Jack, however, was mumbling incoherently and was sort of white and rigid.

Leona ran to Miss Brightons classroom, where she was sitting at her desk writing something. She glanced up at Leona as she walked in. Hello, Miss Sage what is it you need

Leona blushed slightly. I er didnt know about there being an annual masked ball c-c-c-could you h-help her voice trailed off.

Miss Brighton smiled at her. You heard that I was a seamstress when I was younger, eh?

Y-yes maam I heard about it from Jack Leona said. She walked up to Miss Brightons desk.

Miss Brighton beamed at her. You are so cute! Ill have to design the perfect dress and mask for you! she giggled as she grabbed Leona and hugged her.

Thanks, Miss Brighton! Leona gleefully replied.
