Chapter Four

September passed and October came. Leona hadnt heard about another break in for the past month. She was beginning to feel a bit nervous about that.

Munirah didnt help matters by telling her repeatedly that there was something wrong. She was in fact was hearing it again in her English class.

Miss Brighton was up at the front writing a sentence that they would have to diagram. Munirahs voice was breaking through Leonas concentration. Leona just gritted her teeth and concentrated on the sentence.

Then, Miss Brighton stopped as did everyone in class. Time had stopped again and Leona was staring into the two great amber eyes again. I told you to stop doing that and listen to me. Munirah growled.

If you didnt decide to come up in the middle of class like this, that wouldnt be a problem! Leona growled.

Typical each of the bearers was headstrong like this stubborn and what not not that I blame them I was the one that chose them in the first place Munirah said flippantly.

Leona sat stunned. Y-You chose me? Why

The eyes continued to stare at her. Why not

Leona was taken aback. Wh-what do you mean by that?

Why would I not want to choose you. Munirah said.

Be-because Im shy and I cant fight I get scared half the time and try to run away.. Leona said with a quivering voice.

Munirahs eyes narrowed at her. The traits that you have are only what you think you have. Never underestimate yourself. Munirah said in a soft tone. You are unique unlike all of the other bearers.

H-how so? Leona said as she bit her bottom lip.

Munirahs eyes narrowed at her again. Then, they closed and were accompanied by a sigh. Not today one day.. youll learn but not now

Then, the eyes faded and Miss Brighton was talking again. The girls next to her were talking again. The boys were laughing about something as well.

Later that night, Leona sat on her bed, a mirror in front of her as she inspected the necklace she wore. It had not changed. She hadnt really expected it to.

Thats a pretty necklace. Ferns familiar voice intruded on her thoughts. Leona dumbly lowered the mirror, a look of horror on her face.

I-It was given to me by my mum. Leona stumbled over her words as she tried to get them out as quickly as possible.

Is that so? smiled Fern. She sat down on Leonas bed and reached for the necklace. Leona backed away slightly. Fern raised an eyebrow. Whats wrong with you I just want to look at it

Fern suddenly launched her hand again and before Leona had the chance to back away again, Fern was thrown back by an invisible force. Fern landed against the bed across from Leonas. What the hell!

Leona let out a sigh of relief. The lion had not come out this time. Her worrying began again, though. Fern had come back to Leona.

What is that thing! Fern said in a huff.

Leona sat back against the pillow she had propped. She entwined her fingers in the chain. I dont suppose you would let me say it was an accident, will you.

Fern glared at her and Leona succumbed to her fate. Its a necklace

Well spotted, care to tell me anything more? Fern said as she sat on Leonas bed again.

Like I said Its a necklace. Its just a weird one, is all Leona said. It gives me odd powers.

How so.? Fern said as she eyed her oddly.

I turn into a lion. My personality becomes no longer that of me, but a hungry lion and it attacks what I wanted to attack. Or something of the like Leona sighed.

Fern smiled. Im glad you finally told me yourself, Leona I have known from the start that you were something new. Fern beamed cheerfully at Leonas confused expression.

What on Earth do you mean? Leona finally got her nerve back.

Fern kept that smile. It was starting to get annoying. It was somewhat taunting Leona.

Im psychic Fern said.

Leona just stared at Fern incredulously. Then, she started to get off of the bed to head for the door. Not so fast, cat-girl! laughed Fern as she grabbed onto Leonas shirt back.

When Fern had finally dragged Leona back to the bed, Fern sat down again. You cant be serious! Leona said.

Oh, but I am! Oho ho ho! laughed Fern. Is it so hard to believe Im psychic when you yourself are something out of this world?

In a word yes! Leona cried.

Fern kept smiling. Ive known you were harboring a secret from me, Leo that necklace is attracting the attention of thieves, is it not?

Leona didnt say anything, but simply nodded. The same one who raided my panties? Leona blushed, but nodded.

Then, we have to catch him somehow. said Fern with that same wickedly nice smile.

Catch who, dare I ask? said a familiar voice. Leona grumbled as she turned to see Damien walking in with his tie loosened, the top two buttons were undone on his shirt and the tails of his shirt were hanging out. Even his hair looked relaxed.

He sat down on Ferns bed, which was next to Leonas. His chin rested in his hands and he had that awfully wicked smirk on his lips. Have I missed something?

No you havent, so go away muttered Leona.

Damien got closer to her and she gave him a glare. Im sorry did you say something, Sage? he said in his softest voice.

Fern was looking on Leona with a smile. Then, she calmly turned to Damien. Damien please go away or you know what Ill do to you Fern smiled at him pleasantly.

Damien went white for a split second and then grumbled as he stood up and walked out. When he was out of sight, Leona breathed a sigh of relief. I dont understand him. Leona finally said.

Fern smiled at her. You will, eventually

Leona gave Fern a confused stare. Fern just kept up that knowing smile that was making Leona suspect her of something.

Leona leaned closer to Fern. Just dont let my brother know, okay? I promised my mum that I wouldnt tell him.

Fern held out her hand with her pinkie extended. Leona smiled and hooked her pinkie with Ferns. I promise said Fern.

Leona sat back and stared at Fern. How long have you known Damien, anyway

Fern started counting on her fingers silently. Since primary school. She said. About the second grade..

Wow youve endured him that long? asked Leona. How is that possible.

Oh.. its possible in fact, were actually friends Fern smiled at Leona.

He certainly has a funny way of being friends with someone Leona grumbled.

Its his way Fern giggled. Besides he doesnt make friends easily

Leona grunted a laugh. Big surprise.

Fern just kept smiling. Dont worry it just takes a bit for him to actually warm up to someone

Who said I was worried! I hope he never warms up! growled Leona. Hes a prat!

Fern smiled and patted Leona on her head. Lets get some sleep, shall we? Fern said. The other girls will be coming up here soon

Sure enough, the rest of the girls came up and started getting ready for bed when Leona came back after her bath. Fern sat on her bed, reading some book. What are you reading?

Something about the mating habits of the lion grinned Fern mischievously. Leona backed away from her a bit. Fern laughed. Just kidding Im reading a nice book called Doctor Who and the Seeds of Doom.

Doctor Who?

Yes

But whats his name?

Who

The Doctor!

Doctor Who grinned Fern as she shoved the book under Leonas nose. Leona saw the cover. There was an odd fellow with lots of curls and lots of teeth showing and wore the biggest hat Leona had ever seen.

Fern gave Leona a knowing look. Maybe you ought to read it after I explain a few things about the series to you, of course Fern handed Leona the book.

Leona took it and put it on her nightstand. Later Im tired right now Fern yawned. Then, Fern slipped deeper under her covers and closed her eyes. Leona followed suit and slipped under her own covers. Then, she closed her eyes and went to sleep.

Sometime in the middle of the night, someone stalked into the girls dorm room. It was a darkened man with no light anywhere near his face. Leonas ears picked up his breathing.

She opened her eyes and felt the lion come to her. The man was getting nearer. She heard him muttering under his breath. Damned woman What does she think I am a pedophile?

Leona guessed the man was talking about Miss Brighton. He was getting nearer. Now... I have to find the one that has the wild hair

He stopped. He was standing at another girls bed. Leona grumbled silently. The wheel was turning for this man, but the hamster was dead.

The man unsheathed his knife. Leona heard it coming out of its holder. Leona was frightened. She didnt want to deal with him again.

She was more afraid for the girl, however. The man was getting closer as Leona slipped from her bed. She stalked closer to him. He suddenly turned; the knife gleamed for a split second into Leonas eyes.

Her eyes had gone yellow. The reflection made the thief nervous as she walked closer, her head cocked to one side. Then, he stupidly brought out his knife. Stay back! he hissed at her.

Give me the necklace and none of these girls will get hurt! he said.

She launched herself at him, but he was ready this time. His knife cut into her stomach. Leonas mind came back at the sudden screaming pain in her side.

The man held onto her around her waist. I told you to stay put he said in a satisfied tone. Leona couldnt see his face, even though it was right next to hers.

He dug the knife deeper into her side and she reeled from the pain. Her hands gripped his leather jacket as she tried to not concentrate on the pain. Give me the necklace and you wont have anymore pain.

Go ahead and try she grunted. She gasped for air as she tried to get her hand to his knife.

No no no you arent going to get away that easily he said in an amused sort of voice. Little kitty cant take the pain, can she

The knife was slicing into her side. She had not impaled herself, like she had thought. This meant that she could get away from him if he took one hand away from her.

Out of nowhere, a large book was thrown at his head. He let her drop to the ground as he fell backward. Owie he whimpered.

Jen, the red haired girl, was awake as well as Fern. Jen picked up another book and threw it at the man when he started getting back up. Go away, you pervert! she growled.

Several other girls were waking up as well. One screamed and another threw her shoes at the man. He grabbed his bloody knife and ran out of the girls dorm.

Leona stood up as well as she could and, clutching her side, she ran after him down the stairs. Several other girls were behind her.

That was when Leona ran into Jack. He was with a couple of other boys, including Damien and a couple of his friends. Jack held onto Leona as Fern came up behind her with Jen at her side.

Jack took his hand away from Leonas side and nearly fainted. B-bloody hell

What? What happened? asked another boy.

Shes bleeding said Damien as he finished tying his robe on. A couple of his friends made faces. Stop thinking like that! he snapped.

Fern took Leona. We have to get her to the infirmary Fern cried. Damien help me

Why me?! Damien cried after her.

He followed her to the infirmary, helping to support Leona as they walked down the stairs. They walked into the hospital wing and laid Leona on a bed. Its pretty bad, Damien Fern said.

Oh, it cant be that bad its just a scratch! growled Damien. He lifted Leonas shirt and saw the wound. See? Shell survive.

Fern was tearing up; her bottom lip quivered as she fought back tears. Damien sighed and walked to the nurses office door. Open up! We have someone who needs attending to! he growled as he proceeded to kick down the door.

The door opened and a small woman with white hair came out. What? Someone else?

Mrs. Horner, please! Leonas been hurt! Someone sliced her with a nasty looking knife! Fern cried.

Leona would have laughed at it all if she wasnt in so much pain. It ran all through her left side, where the wound was.

Mrs. Horner ran over and inspected the wound. Leona gripped Ferns hand as pain shot through her. Its all right.. well just bandage you up and you can go back to bed, then

In about five minutes, Mrs. Horner had successfully bandaged Leonas side. Then, she gave Leona a couple of pills. Swallow these itll take away the pain She said with a sleepy smile. Then, she retreated to her office.

How does she sleep in there. Leona asked.

She sleeps in her wardrobe. Its big enough, but its still a little weird Fern said with a smile.

Okay.. could we please get back so that I can get some more sleep? grumbled Damien. I still dont know why you dragged me out here in the first place I was quite content in sleeping until those girls screamed.

It wasnt my fault! Leona growled at him.

It was too if you hadnt had that man in there, none of this would have happened! Damien snapped at her.

What, you think I asked him to try to make a salad out of me?!

Okay were at the door for the girls room do you want to join us, Damien? Fern smirked at him.

He turned and walked up the stairs. Just be quiet this time he grumbled.

Fern giggled as she helped Leona into the room. They made it to their beds and Fern helped Leona under the covers. Go to sleep, Leo.. Youll feel better in the morning. Then, Leona fell asleep.
