Chapter Nine

“Jace, my man, are you getting her to at least talk to you?” Wade asked JC a few days after JC had run into
Catriona at the store.

“Don’t worry, she’ll come around,” JC assured Wade, as the walked past Catriona’s car.

“Good. The bitch is going down. Her friends, too.”

Another betrayal of Faith. How was he going to forgive himself after that? He should just say he didn’t
want to be a part of this.

“Don’t worry, Wade. Catriona and her friends will all go down.”

*~*~*

“I hate having to work with Lance,” Faith complained, walking into the apartment. She’d just gotten back
from the library where they’d been doing more research for their project.

“Then why are you working with him?” Sarah asked.

“Only person who probably would work with me,” Faith said.

“Then you should be happy to work with him.”

Faith was going to reply, but she was interrupted by a pounding on the door. She opened it to reveal Chris.

“What’s up, Chris?” Faith asked.

“Is Elona here?” Chris asked, walking inside.

“She’s in her room,” Sarah told him. “But she might be sleeping.”

“That’s ok, I’ll wake her up.” Chris knocked on Elona’s door, then walked in without waiting for her to
answer. “Lona,” Faith and Sarah could hear him say, “time to get up.” Then it sounded like he jumped on her bed.

“Chris, stop jumping on my bed,” Elona said. “I was asleep.”

“Which is why I was jumping on your bed. It’s time to get up.”

Faith and Sarah looked at each other before laughing. Chris and Elona were the strangest of friends. One
was hyperactive, usually happy, and the other was very calm and serious.

*~*~*

“How’s the project going?” Justin asked Lance.

“Okay. Faith won’t talk to me about anything else, but at least she’s talking to me about that.”

“What are you two fighting about now?”

“Her defenses.”

“Excuse me?”

“Her defenses. I asked her why she gets all cold and bitter when people ask her questions about her
religion and style and she got pissed off at me.”

“Maybe she doesn’t like the way you ask her questions.”

“I doubt you’d have any better luck with asking her questions then I would.”

“Try being truly interested in her, and not asking the questions because you want to know why she’s doing
all of this stuff.”

“I am. The questions just come out wrong.”

“Don’t know what to tell you there, man.” Justin stood up and picked up his backpack.

“Where are you going?” Lance asked.

“To study with Sarah. She’s helping with my Spanish.”

“But you,” Lance began, as Justin closed the door, “don’t need help with Spanish,” he finished.

*~*~*

“What are you doing here?” Faith asked, staring at JC. He stood right outside the door.

“We need to talk,” JC began.

“No we don’t,” Faith responded. She started to close the door.

JC held it open. “Faith, don’t do this. We need to talk.”

“I wouldn’t talk to you if you were the last person on Earth.” Faith pushed at the door.

“Faith Britt-”

“Don’t you fucking say it, Joshua. No one knows my name, and I intend to keep it that way.”

“Faith Edwards, quit being such a stubborn bitch and talk to me.”

“Go to-” Faith bit her tongue, to stop herself from saying the rest of the oh-so-popular phrase.

“What, still can’t cuss? You always were such a good girl, never cussing.”

“Witches don’t like to wish harm upon anyone. It’s part of the Wiccan Rede. ‘Do what thou will/ Though
thou harm none’.” Faith smiled at his shocked expression. “And wishing someone to hell is in essence, harming
them.”

JC recovered from his shock of learning that Faith was a witch quickly. “So if witches don’t believe in
harming people, do they believe in harming themselves?” He grabbed her left wrist, with it’s faint scar from her
suicide attempt nearly five years ago.

Faith’s eyes darkened. “That’s none of your damn business, JC. You didn’t care then, you shouldn’t care
now. Get the fuck out of my life, and stay out of it. I don’t know what shit you’re trying to pull by becoming friends with my friends, or trying to apologize to me, but whatever it is, I don’t like it! Leave me and my friends alone.” She slammed the door in his face.

“Damnit, Faith, you can’t keep on doing this. Every time someone tries to be nice to you, you push them
away. You won’t listen to them, won’t trust them. One day it’s gonna backfire on you.”

“Maybe if I hadn’t learned when I was young not to trust anyone, then it wouldn’t be like that. But I have
you to thank for that, Joshua.”

“Mark my words, Faith, you’re gonna regret not trusting people.”

“You mean I should pay attention to something a shallow asshole like you says? No thanks.” JC heard
another door slam inside, and knew that Faith was in her room and she wouldn’t listen to anything else he said
that day. Which was a real pity. He wanted to tell her a little about Wade’s plan, so she’d know that he was up to
something. Also, he wanted to apologize for everything that had happened in the past years, and see if she’d al
least consider being friends with him.
